  • Happy Hunting Moneyspider - I warn you it's addictive.

PS Just edited to say - hope you didn't find any of the above a bit patronising - it wasn't meant as a "lecture". I just thought that if you were new to collecting you might find it helpful. I find collecting and hunting out treasures fun but it's worth swotting up a bit.

Not at all, its refreshing to have someone share their thoughts on what to look out for :)

Ive been dabbling for 15 year odd now, so do have a fair bit of knowledge, studio pottery all looks pretty much the same, but having a certain mark or initials can be the difference between pennies and hundreds.

Jensen / Jansen...did he also produce jewellery?

    TBH - I don't know. Maybe a bit of googling is required.:rotfl:
  • This is my kind of thread, right up my street. I am a young self employed manual worker looking at achieving great wealth sooner rather than later. Millionaire status being the 9 year goal for me. I have shorter term goals but I'll not get ahead of myself and go beyond 9 years just yet.

I have just got back to work this week from a 3 week break so a bit of a shock to system but raring to go and get closer to my goals. My business has debt of £30k(roughly). This is manageable currently but would like to clear it as soon as I possibly can and start building up my wealth and assets to bring me more income.

Hoping to come out fighting from this recession we seem stuck in. I will pop my head in here now and again as could use advice on business advertising as mine is fairly basic at present, one of the things holding me back a bit.

Jensen / Jansen...did he also produce jewellery?

Did some homework. Georg Jensen, yes they made jewellery.

    Now this is really weird.....

I was looking at a website and was stunned to see that I have a brooch which looks suspiciously like one of theirs. I haven't doubled checked for markings because TBH I can't remember where I've put it. (It will be lurking around somewhere:eek:).

It was a gift from my MIL nearly 30 years ago. She would probably have bought it from an antiques fair so the dates could well tie in.

Isn't that strange. MIL died several years ago so I won't be selling it but I will take it to a specialist just for interest sake.

Hello Young Businessman - good luck with your quest.

    Whatcha y'all doin???

Well April was ok - made £240 from selling a few bits and bobs, and of course family members still paying me back. DS1 will start paying back this month too apparently so that will be a bit more coming in. Just adding to the savings pot. Other than that not much happening here.

I recently met someone who has a lot of "irons in the fire", several businesses, some property etc. We were discussing financing and it transpires that she has mortgages and business loans totalling £2m - her businesses are doing well and she's riding out the storm ok.

However, all her loans etc were taken out before the Credit Crunch and of course we know that banks are just not lending at all.

Now she runs several companies, employs a lot of people, thus providing work and helping her local economy. She admitted that if she was starting out today she wouldn't be able to build her little empire the way she has because banks have reigned in lending to such a degree.

She's right. Small business can't grow or worse still are forced to go bust and some of us on here can't even get started properly.

That is why I'm just trying to build up a bit of seed capital for now, selling a few bits and bobs to add to the pot, cutting back on any unnecessary spending. Next step is to register for a couple of training courses to refresh and update my skills.

Just quietly working towards my goals. ;)

    Hello my lovelies!

Well Im still riding the storm so to speak, im booked up for the foreseeable future and still doing quotes!

The thing I have struggled with is finding employees! Im currently trying to fill 3 full time roles and people just dont want to know!
Admittedly its a bit of a niche and female decorators arent as plentiful as some job roles but ive had very few people respond!
Ive offered a good deal to one person and they decided benefits was the better option. That seems to be the trend. Im now trying to recruit apprentices instead and train them up and hopefully set them up with a good job but again applicants are few and far between.
on the plus side im getting a nice little deposit together and yet again in talks with a mortgage advisor to try and secure a mortgage for a buy to let.
Decorating wise I am getting faster with every job, My standards are very high so jobs are always spot on, and the money is now reaching proper levels which mean a wage is just round the corner.

Im almost debt free as well :-) (not counting my mortgage which is £47k)

    Hi Tink

Did you see that programme on BBC1 (or maybe 2, can't remember) last night at 8-00pm about a company who manufacture cushions. The guy has two factories one in China and one in Kirby (near Liverpool).

He is trying to build up the Kirby factory but is having problems finding the right employees - he is also struggling to find workers for his Chinese factory but for different reasons.

    It makes for interesting viewing.

I can understand your frustrations - there can't be many female decorators around - that is after all your usp (unique selling point):rotfl: I would think apprentices would be the way to go.

Would "female returners" be any good - although as most of those would be mums with young(ish) children I guess they would really need part time hours. I don't suppose juggling part time staff would work for you because your jobs will be time sensitive.

Are you looking to employ permanent full time or could it be some kind of flexible contract depending on the workloads, say 40 weeks per year. That might be ok for female returners who can do more or less full time hours during term time but who need some time off around school holidays. Just a thought. When my two were little I would have killed for that kind of working arrangement.

Anyway glad to hear you are making progress with the deposit and mortgage for your next property.

My DS2 currently works in a garden centre and has just started retraining (in his own time - starting with distance learning) as an electrical engineer. So ..................I'll be fixed up with a Sparky when I need one.;)

Great news on the debt front. :T

    Hi Tink and LessonLearned,

Glad to hear things are progressing in the right direction. Sad that people don't want to work. I thought benefits were meant to be a helping hand back on track, not a lifestyle, but then I would never consider not working; obviously some people just have a different mindset.

Progressing slowly here, but also in the right direction I think. Current plan is to focus on two areas, first to maximise the work coming in to me, and then once I reach saturation point (the most I can handle) I need to seriously think about how I can either make more from the work coming in (which would ideally be by getting clinets to come direct to me rather than through an agency as many do at present, so cutting out the middle man), or by coming up with some sort of 'passive income' that would complement my work and run alongside it without too much further input once it was set up. Hope that eventually I can manage both of these.

Tink, funnily enough I now think of you every time I look at our rather dodgy DIY paintwork and know you would disapprove...

    Onwards and upwards folks!
