The view from my bedroom..one of the reasons I faught so hard to keep this house

  • Lovely, Tinktay - you can't beat a house with a view :) This one will be done up (and that'll be quite a bit of work, it needs rewiring, we need to put a larger window in the third bedroom because the only light in it is from the same size as that tiny velux you can see at the front, kitchen needs starting over from scratch, the windows, although not that old, have got condensation in between the double-glazing panes and there's a bit of an issue with the kitchen ceiling where the immersion tank either burst or leaked at some point - though at least there's a nice new one of those installed!), painted white and will then in all likelihood be done as a holiday let. My neighbour did it with her aunt's old house a few doors away from this one, it only slept four but she did it to a very high finish and was getting £750 a week in high season.

Caz - congratulations! That looks sooo beautiful.

    Tink - so does that!

LL - that's a pretty intense week, and I really admire you for managing to pay *any* attention to work.

Smiley - you know where to start! Spending habits! You can't ever be a millionaire or equivalent if you let it run through your fingers ... good luck.

My stuff - blog structure! I figured out how to get category pages, after struggling for a whole day, I think it's essential to do that. So now I have to apply the lessons I've learned (good name, LL :) ) to the other blog too, and then work on content. So it looks like structure really is going to take me almost the whole of August after all. On the computer, anyway - I'm also doing decluttering and weeding/mulching. All of it is towards the aim of retiring the way I want to retire :)

I have awful spending habits and I drive - what's best to tackle first?

Yes, as Karmacat said, tackle the spending. Sit down and make yourself a spreadsheet of everything you spend, makes it easy to shock yourself into seeing how that could add up into something better over a period of time.
I'd also recommend you take a look at the Mr Money Mustache web site - it's been mentioned on here before, but he's got a good take on reducing "spendiness" and so on - some bad language, sometimes the "can-do" attitude gets a bit grating, but it's a good read overall.

Hi Smiley - don't apologise for being a newbie. Nice to "meet" you.

Basically I think wealth creation is a two pronged attack - maximising earnings and minimising outgoings.

so yes, I agree with Droopsnout - start with watching your spending.. A spending diary or a spreadsheet and record absolutely everything. A couple of weeks and you will soon start to see what changes you can make. It's so very easy to just fritter money away.

I made my spendthrift son do this a few years back - within a fortnight he was a changed man.

Read up a bit, some good business books, some biographies of people you like or admire, not just entrepeuneurs but people who have achieved something, who, have overcome the odds.

There are loads of blogs around now, some very inspiring.

It's all about motivation and goal setting, having a dream and then just working out how you are going to make that dream come true.

Tinktay - love the view from your window. I have to admit I do love a nice view, failing that if its a property in a city then I will always go for a nice quiet street, fairly near to a park or some open space.

I have been thinking about new hobbies etc, and crafts which I could turn into another sideline business and have started thinking about courses for next year.

Karma - im having a battle with slugs and snails and they are winning...they ate my beans, and winter veg, now they've started on some pot chrysanths. I have to bring them in at night. I forgot the other night, the little s o d s have ruined them.

right - coffee break over - back to work. Am having a good old tidy up, sorting out the study and my bedroom. Later I need to tackle dads paperwork. Last batch.......

Thanks so much for the replies. I've worked out a budget for each month after looking at my bank statements! Put a block on certain websites, especially clothes/beauty ones, to remove temptation. Going to have a clear out this weekend and get rid of some bits on some book buying websites and ebay. Had a look at how much I spend when I go out and it's ridiculous so if it doesn't fit the budget then tough. Going to switch to soft drinks too which should help with my fitness goals.

The first goal is to buy my own home so going to put a picture of a dream home as my wallpaper/background on my phone and laptop to stay motivated - fingers crossed!

Or the way to riches isn't always glamourous.....

True story. Thought you might find it interesting and inspiring.

Once upon a time, in the early 80s, there was a young boy who hated school and whose teachers thought he was a waste of space. He wasn't dyslexic. Didn't have learning difficulties, he just hated being stuck in a classroom.

Left school at 16' no qualifications other than a couple of lacklustre GCSEs. Got a job in the office of a plant hire company.

Thought to himself I can do this, so left and set up a rival company. Got a couple of contracts doing road cleans for developers.

The plant hire grew, the road sweeps grew, and he then go into waste disposal. today I noticed his name on a skip........another string to,his bow.

    He's done well.

His business could hardly be said to be glamourous but it gives him a great life, lovely home, holiday home in the sun, best seats at all the top sporting fixtures.

He didn't have a "big idea", and his business wasn't original. He looked at what his employers were doing and just thought he could do it, bigger and better.

    So he did......

His parents - my friends - which is how I know all about his story - were worried sick when he cut lose and went SE within a couple of years of leaving school.

Take heart it can be done, you don't need rich parents, you don't need a university education.

Did anyone watch The Anne Robinson provramme called Britiains Spending,Habits. There was an immigrant from Romania, started llfe living in a caravan.

He now owns several caravan sites and is worth millions......still buys his suits at the discount outlets.

Ive finally, finsihed dads paperwork. wahoo.,that's two wills and estates, a house sale and all the Social Services stuff done in the last year. It's been a marathon.

Now perhaps i can finally concentrate on my own affairs.

Filled out another PPI claim form today......so that's at least one bank which has admitted they owe me money.

I doubt it will be much, but it's better in my account that it is in theirs.:D

    Every little helps......

Picked up a fabulous oriental rug 12 x 10 for just £15 - perfect for DS1s house. He has just finished sanding and refinishing floorboards - it will look just right against the ancient dark oak boards.

    Have a great weekend.

caz, any water stains on walls...don't fall for expensive stain blocker solutions...a simple oil based undercoat painted on to the stain, over lapping by a few centimetres or so should suffice. Do 2 coats just to be sure but it stops the stain coming back through.
This works with felt tip, permenant markers, finger prints..anything oil based or solvent based really. Might only svae you £5 but might save you £100 if you kept repainting wondering why it didn't cover

My little girl had her 6th birthday party today which has set us back a few bob but hey ho shes happy

I did sell a tv unit for £10 which paid for the party bags treats (bought party bags 12 months ago when they were reduced to 10p for 8)
