It's illegal for a dental nurse to do this treatment as well . Any dental nurses who do such work risk losing their registration with the general dental council particularly as they are not working under the prescription of a dentist.

The first successful prosecution has already taken place and others are in the pipeline http://www.gdc-uk.org/Membersofpublic/Illegalpractice/Pages/Tooth-whitening.aspx
  • can i just ressurect this thread a little to thank you for investigating this cowboy company!

They are offereing the service again on groupon today and i researched and came across this thread!

the fact that they said they are not linked to smile-spa is ridiculous!
    smile-spa.co.uk/ takes you to smile-science.co.uk!

and the gumtree advert shows smile-spa outside Zara shop with the same smile-science branding!

    love it! haha
  • Went to these people today - probably a good job I didn't see this forum post until after otherwise I may of given it a miss!
I went via the Groupon deal that was offered last week so paid £79 rather than £199 which is what they say is the 'normal' rate. I certainly wouldn't of paid £199.

Experience was okay and teeth are certainly a lot whiter. It seems its up to you to read the small print on paperwork rather than them explaining it all to you. The only downsides I'd say there was were 1) being in a shopping centre its not exactly private as the booth walls are not that high and if you have the seat furthest to the right you get lots of people peering down on you from the balconies on the floor above seeing what's happening so now I know how animals in a zoo feel (2) they try to flog you some home teeth whitening stuff at the end for an extra £50 which is apparently a special price for Groupon customers. Don't know if it is or isn't but politely declined it. According to the till receipt I was looked after by a 'Dr' somebody but a Doctor in what or from where I don't know.

Would I go again? Yes for the £79 deal but I'd be more careful in my choice of seat!

Please read the earlier postings including investigations by the BBC.

These people are breaking the law , they are not dentists and by exposing you to unknown chemicals at unknown concentrations you are risking not only your dental health but your general health.

Cases of beauticians brought to book recently include a case where a ladies asthma was made worse permanently , multiple cases where teeth were damaged so much they needed root treatment and crowns, and multiple chemical burns.

It's not real moneysaving when you save money by gambling with your health at the hands of the unqualified using the unknown.
  • I've also booked the groupon deal at Westfield and I wished I'd have checked for reviews before I did. But not because of the negative reviews, it's the fact that it's in a booth in a shopping centre and not a dental clinic that is putting me off, together with the fact that it took me almost a minute to get the technician to spell my first name when I rang up to make the appointment.

Having said that, I think it's a shame that of all the negative posts on this thread, not one is posted by someone who has had treatment there. And as soon as someone comes on to post a positive comment, they get attacked from all angles and accused of being a fake and a spammer. What sort of value are these forums meant to provide with cynics like this hovering around?! It's a shame because this place has potential to provide invaluable information to potential customers but instead it just gets abused.

Anyway, I have a week to think about it, but in the meantime if anyone has any first hand and recent experience at this place then I'd love to hear about it. Otherwise I'm not interested in conjecture or speculation.

    Thanks.

You may wish to read this http://www.gdc-uk.org/Newsandpublications/publications/Publications/GDC_Tooth_whitening_leaflet%20(2).pdf

It gives you an idea of the questions you want answered before someone puts an unknown chemical on one of the most sensitive parts of the body. It's been published in the wake of the first successful prosecutions of beauty therapists and people running tooth whitening clinics running illegal toothwhitening businesses.

A link to the most recent prosecution of a non dentist providing tooth whitening http://www.dentistry.co.uk/news/news_detail.php?id=4746
  • Thanks for your help.

    I've cancelled the Groupon offer.

There's another one at a Harley St clinic, it seems that all these offers are from clinics and not dental surgeries.
  • Another Smile Science con on Groupon selling foam to whiten your teeth. Don't buy, I did and big mistake.

Firstly after using my teeth became hyper sensitive and overnight became a nice shade of yellowy brown.

Since then I have obviously stopped using it but my teeth are so sensitive I'm having to take nurofen every 4 hours just to keep the pain away.

Secondly after a little search I came across the same product on Amazon for only £8.95 so when they say the price should be £59 and then it's discounted to £19 on Groupon the whole thing is a lie - this shouldn't be allowed, Groupon shouldn't allow these cons, they should check out the real normal selling price.

Anyhow, enough of my rant - all I can say is really to echo everyone else on this thread - be very careful what you put in your mouth to whiten your teeth (either at home or 'professional' treatment) and please keep clear of these con artists.
