self diagnosis on DLA claim form

When filling in the DLA form Is it ok to mention aspergers syndrome and bipolar type 2 disorder rather than just saying mental health problems?
even though i've not had an official diagnosis but self diagnosed.

Self-diagnosis is dangerous, not just in terms of trying to treat yourself but also in terms of filling out your DLA form.
If you state that your problems are due to Aspergers and bipolar type 2 yet when the DWP write to your doctors for information you're going to come unstuck as your doctors will deny the diagnosis.

It is much better to concentrate on the symptoms and how these relate to your care and/or mobility needs. DLA is not given for a particular diagnosis (except in certain circumstances), but for mobility/care needs.

You do not need a diagnosis in order to receive DLA but claiming a diagnosis when there is none could throw your whole application into question if your doctors don't support your comments.

If you truly believe you have these conditions then you need to have a proper assessment by a medical professional so they can help you.

    Mrs Manada is right.

I had to write on mine 2 years ago being tested for a Neurological problems, explained the problems.

it is now on my renewal that i can say that the test were for M.S. and when i got the diagnosis.

  • Even if you were medically qualified, and had an additional PG Certificate in Autism you would not be allowed to diagnose & treat yourself.

You could write that you believe you have this and that and are in the process of being diagnosed by this person at this location etc. Without a confirmed diagnosis or in the process of being clinically diagnosed it is unlikely they would take your word for any proclaimed illness in the current circumstances.
Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. I try to be an even-handed poster and accept that you at times may not agree with these opinions or how I choose to express them, this is not my problem. • If a DLA claim is over exaggerated, this will lead to the claim receiving further scrutiny, as a Decision Maker will have access to information regarding how a condition will affect a person.
Likewise, if you claim to have named disabilities, without a clinical diagnosis, I would expect your claim to receive that extra examination.

It sounds harsh, but your basically lying, laying claim to conditions you do not have.
Stick to the facts, and back these up with medical evidence / doctors reports. If you have been referred to specialists, say so, when and who. Any person you put on the form, can be contacted and a factual report requested.

Self-diagnosis is never good, whether you're intending to claim DLA or not.

Plus, DLA is based on care and mobility needs, and rarely diagnosis.

I received DLA before I got some of my diagnoses. I was just honest about my health problems and when it asked for diagnosis put the diagnoses I had officially received and then what diagnoses I was being investigated for etc.

I think that if you start putting down diagnoses that you don't have, your claim will come under further scrutiny because they do actually write to your doctor (most of the time anyway) and check and if your doctor denies any knowledge of the diagnoses you have given yourself then you might come under fire for it.

Aspergers and bi-polar carry similar symptoms so to have both would probably indicate further scrutiny from the decisions makers as previously advised. You would also find similar symptoms in a range of other mental health issues. Better to state your needs than put forward diagnosies.

My docoter wrote in my buss pass application forum Autistic spectrum disorder but put in brackets (??) Does that mean I ASD?
?? means that it is a dfferential diagnosis. That is the GP believes this to be the case but no expert in these conditions has confirmed it.

Personally (and this may just be me), I'd take it to mean that you meet the criteria for ASD but it's still questionable and not a formal diagnosis.

My mental health nurse wrote on my DLA form "although he has not been officially diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder his symptoms are very similar"
and my GP wrote on a sick note "generalised anxiety disorder"
