I just wanted to confirm how other people were dealing with these letters.

    I keep them for posterior.

And before you ask, that's not a typo. :p
I still think No Contact is best.

    I agree.

when without too much difficulty they can be traced via their ISP
    and IP address.

Tracing someone by using their IP address can be an expensive and time consuming venture as most ISP's won't release details without a court order.
It becomes even more difficult if the person concerned has made a bit of an effort to make themselves harder to find.

If someone wanted to trace me for example, they could probably do it, but it would take them a long time, a fair bit of effort, and probably a fair bit of money as well, and I'm not even doing anything to deliberately hide my details.

There record keeping for communication is so bad it is ludicrous.

I think I'll write them a letter demanding they stop contacting me, even though they haven't, and see if I can get a tenner out of them :D

Great idea, think I will give it a try too. Love it!!
  • After thoroughly investigating the issues of cancelling our TV licence my wife and I decided it was a pointless expense. The main reason being that we prefer to occupy our minds in different ways now that the children have found their own feet.

I did a brief search after receiving a rather offensive looking demand from the TV licensing authority and unfortunately I haven’t time to read this extensive topic so I am just going to air my gripe.

As a consequence of the natural licence expiry, and cancellation of the direct debit, we received an envelope which was windowed in such a manner that it implied you had committed an offence, and that in itself is harassment.

After taking the trouble to follow their guidelines to opt out it is evident that the renewal database and the opt-out database do not synchronise which is great for the subcontract collection agency. The BBC has managed to create a whole new business to help massage the unemployment figures by mismanagement of information.

I won’t bore you with details but suffice it to say I have worked behind the scenes in some interesting places as a consultant, many of which are funded by the tax payer and I have developed a real distaste for poor process and waste.

    In short:
    • They have no right of access (unless by warrant)
    • Never tell them your name (you are the occupier)
    • Never use offensive language or act aggressively
    • Demand (politely) they occupy a public space whilst talking to you (listen and follow point 5)
    • Never sign anything on the doorstep and ask for a certified copy to be sent to you for revue from the licence issuer, it can’t be certified by a collection subcontractor (this is cost prohibitive and unlikely to happen)
    • Detector vans are a myth (although they look equipped they couldn’t afford the additional technology to produce admissible evidence)
    • Masking an IP is child’s play
    • Never watch or record anything live from your address
    • You could use a “Cease and Desist” but it is a can of worms and amusing

I am really looking forward to a visit from such an incompetent bunch of bureaucrats.

I'm looking for examples of the BBC/TV Licensing letter that states:

"You have not responded to our previous letters. We want to ensure you have the information you may need before a hearing is set at your local court".

In particular, I'm interested in whether it is ALWAYS addressed to "Dear Sir/Madam" or whether anyone has ever received it addressed to them by name?

It was mentioned in one of the replies and they seemed concerned about it. Personally I don’t, or have no need to do so.

Potentially the only time you would need to do this is if you were watching a live broadcast via the Internet without a licence and that is not cricket.

Not wasting 20 minutes of my life watching that. Also, they utterly lost all credibility in my eyes when they put a swastika in the BBC logo. it'll all be pathetic small minded conspiracy theorist !!!!!!!!, I expect, anyway.
