  • Can Martin send out on his next email that TVL target students moving into university halls, last year they sent a letter every week changing the style of them and try to make it sound like you need a tv license just for possessing a tv/computer despite what you use it for. They tell you to phone them up and notify them you do not require a license but this is just a way for them to get your details and try to sell you a tv license that you don't need and don't want my operator said i should buy one 'just in case' i buy a tv later on in the year.

Heres the thing though it only stopped the letters until the next term started when the whole process started again - this time with my name on the letters titled misleading things like "FINAL DEMAND" and "FINAL WARNING" in some sort of attempt to make me sound like a criminal despite not actually doing anything wrong.

I want to make sure that students this year are not tricked by TVL's methods to try and get you to buy their TV license as some may actually believe these methods.

Look out for GS4 meter monkeys. On a.n.other post one of their staff has said they have recently been awarded a contract to check for licence dodgers.

I just moved into a new flat, got a tv just for DVDs and games. NO tv signal though. Have filled out a 'no license required' form on the bbc license website and sent it to them. They said they would send me a letter through the post with 'further instructions'

Anyway, never not had a tv signal before so judging by this thread it comes with a lot of hassle... what can I expect? Any advice?
  • Oh dear. Don’t get me started. I gave up watching TV when I got my first computer. I enjoyed exploring the web so much and meeting and chatting to people from all over the world.

I let them know that I didn’t need a TV licence umpteen times but the letters kept coming almost on a monthly bases. At the time I didn’t even have a TV let alone watch TV.

The guys called a few times and I let them in and thought it funny that they would look behind the sofa to see if I was hiding a TV. Their attitude was funny too as they looked at me like I was weird for not having a TV. I eventually got one for DVDs and Play station (I know how to have fun). :)

Almost fifteen years on and I received another letter just the other day. I filed it like I did the others in the bin.

From what I can gather their records are a joke. And they just push and push and hope people will give in and get a licence. I have to admit I almost did just that when my sisters offered to buy me one.

I really don’t need a TV licence. Why should I have to prove to them that I don’t. It’s their job to prove that I do.

What really annoys me is that the DVLA dont come knocking on your door just in case you have a car they dont know about

If anyone is interested, I have been annoying TVLA for a while now since they sent an empty threat of court action for me not having (or needing) a TV License. Makes for some arduous but hopefully interesting reading. I am trying to get £1,000 compensation out of them for harassment, I don't know if I have a case but according to the Protection from Harassment Act I might well. Does anyone know where you would have to take something like this to actually claim compensation for harassment? Would it be small claims court?

    Anyway, the link is: http://thedailynag.wordpress.com/2011/10/06/spoonfuloflies/

Let me know what you think! :D

P.s. just found this looks quite interesting, seems TVLA have really been riding the general public way past the point of harassment: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/assets/files/pdf/review_report_research/tvl/tvl_cab.pdf. I've also see something about appealing with the BBC Trust, but have a feeling this might not be very successful. http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/contact/complaints_appeals/appeal_trust.shtml Any thoughts?
  • Can you quantify a loss of £1,000 to justify your claim for compensation?
