Does it mean that, eventually, I should consider uninstalling MWE and have AVAST instead?
It explains the log!
Avast is lighter on resources, and far more proven as an antivirus. The drawback is that it'll be more active with popups and so more intrusive than MSE. Another issue is that they've been messing up their webshield definitions a lot in the past 2 months with bad updates, but at least they're getting quicker at spotting it. Just makes me worry about their quality control.
Overall Avast is still worthwhile to switch to.
Here are the instructions to uninstall MSE:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2435760
Here is Avast:
http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download
Don't worry about the marketing thing with the online protections suggesting that you can't shop or bank safely without the paid version.
If you install Avast, make sure Windows Defender is completely turned off (Start > Control Panel > Windows Defender) as uninstalling MSE might activate Defender.0 -

Thank you so much - again!
I have reinstalled MSE (for now) and it is running on real time. It says 'fully protected' so I seem to be fine for now. Thank you very much for the really helpful links.
I ran another HJT log a few minutes ago and this is the result - I hope it is problem free but, as always, please let me know what you think:

To disable Teatimer:
http://www.malwarehelp.org/how-to-enabledisable-spybot-teatimer.html
The instructions are from 2008, but should be roughly correct.0 -
Sorry but the log still doesn't look right. Can you double check that you are running HijackThis as Administrator? It doesn't show the running process and doesn't have the autoruns for MSE. It doesn't even have explorer showing...
If you are running HijackThis from the start menu, then right click on it, select Properties > Compatibility > tick the box for Run as Administrator, and press okay. Next time you run it, it'll automatically be run as administrator.
To show that MSE is installed properly, it should have something like this:
Running processes:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\msseces.exe
and an autostart:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSSE] "c:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Essentials\msseces.exe" -hide -runkey
I would uninstall MSE, then reinstall it using the Microsoft.com link.0 -
You can check potentially what's going on if you run this tool to check your installed security programs, Am I OESIS OK?
http://www.opswat.com/certified/am-i-oesis-ok
It'll scan the computer for security software, under some broad categories. Go into the antivirus category, and hopefully only MSE will be there. Once in the view of MSE, click the "diagnostic information" and it'll have useful information, such as if its installed properly, if its genuine, and if the services are installed.
Alternatively Belarc Personal Advisor might shed some light:

Oh dear - I'm not doing well at all. I did run HJT as Administrator but I'll do it again. I tried the link you suggested but it would only offer a drop down list e.g Windows XP or Vista etc. but not Windows7.
I have 1 Antiphising Product Mozilla Firefox, 4 Antispyware - Microsoft Windows Defender, MSE, Malawarebytes and SurfRight-HitmanPro. 1 Antiv Virus - MSE, BackupClient 1 - MS Windows Backup and Restore, 1 Firewall - Microsoft Windows Firewall. 1 HD Encryption - Microsoft Corporation BitLocker Drive Encryption and 2 Patch Agents - Microsoft Windows update and auto update.
Phew! I had no success at all with Spybot teatimer. I couldn't locate it with the link and I couldn't find it to oper on my computer - it is hiding! (Really frustrating.) I'll run a HJT log on Administrator again and hope for better success this time. As long as you are OK with it - I'm more than happy to persevere. I'll post the log.
Thank you.

This is my recent HJT log. I ran the programme as Administrator (honestly) - before I ran the programme I found Spybot Search and Destroy in system config and I unticked it. Will that delete it for me? I really could not find a proper link to delete it in any other way. Here is the log:

Thanks for all your help - I need some sleep to undo the brain block I have! I'll log on again later and hope to look at things in a clearer light. (I'm a bit paranoid but I've checked again and Microsoft Security Essentials is on my computer and it says Computer status protected, Real Time protection On and Virus and Spyware Definitions Up to Date.) (Tomorrow - or later today - is another day!)
Crimson0 -
I've just run another HJT log (as Administrator) so I hope there is nothing sinister. Because I'm afraid I don't really understand all the significance, as before, I'll be grateful for your opinion.
For me it's a bit like one step forward and the same step back - but I am learning, thank you.

OOps - I forgor to paste the log - here it is!
