^^^^ trouble with teatimer it can well slow a system down and possibly conflict with other security software.... I always advise peeps to turn it off and just use the passive protection :)

edit - it doesn't loook like any AV on there at the mo, but previous logs have shown traces of AVG and avast. MSE was also mentioned somewhere :(

The original log was after MSE was uninstalled, and it was supposed to have been reinstalled but no sign in any of them. I should have been paying more attention to its absence!

What's the trace of AVG in the above log, just for my edification?

The log looks much better :) Glad you've been able to get this far. Still got the shop and scan activex object in there, but if you use the site then it'll keep getting installed anyway.

Edit: What antivirus do you have installed by the way?

Actually is your version of SuperAntiSpyware the paid version with the realtime blocking? Or is it the free version that only allows manual on-demand scans. Might be worth setting that not to start at boot time, as it has no need to be running unless you decide to do a scan. If you go into the Superantispyware settings, then you just uncheck the 'start superantispyware when windows starts' bit like in this picture:
    http://i1-win.softpedia-static.com/screenshots/SUPERAntiSpyware_4.png

I know it's been a very long haul and you have been first class at helping me out - thank you +++. (Everyone's been brilliant!)

I am happy to keep Shop and Scan for now - but may review later.
I'm not sure what Spybot's teatimer actually does but, unless you say otherwise, I'll leave it undisturbed.
I have the free SuperAntiSpyware version. I have done as you suggest and have unticked the box to run when Windows start.

I have Microsoft Security Essentials which runs automatically once in 24 hours - at 9 pm I think. Is that an Anti Virus programme or do I need something else? (I can't be certain but I think I had AVG on my previous computer.) When the gentleman set up this computer for me it was with Microsoft Security Essentials and I thought that was all I needed. To be honest - I didn't even know exactly what it was.

Hopefully this will be the very last post I trouble you with but, as I've said before, I can't thank you enough. Do you think my computer is now safe for me to log in to my on line banking again?

Since the disaster I have't touched on line banking but I normally go into it regularly.

    Crimson.

Russ - not in the last log, but a previous one showed the worm radar BHO and a couple of other bits, and I'm sure avast 5 was in the same log.

Crimson - please check you have an antivirus prog installed and running, 'coz that last log looks not to have one. Avast is better than MSE.

For teatimer, see post #92 as to why I'd turn it off :)

I would suggest you confirm 32 or 64-bit OS, and run a completely fresh hjt log.......

Microsoft Security Essentials should be on all the time with the resident or realtime guard. It was only when Gunjack mentioned the AVG traces that I realised that I should have spotted that you didn't have any sign of this (sorry!).

It's not enough just to run a scan at 9pm each day, as you are vulnerable the rest of the time.

Please click on the orange 'Download it now' on the Microsoft page and reinstall it:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/security_essentials/default.aspx and reboot when it asks.

With Teatimer, the idea is that it prevents system settings from being changed. I've only used it for about half a day before I removed it many years ago, and don't usually recommend it, but happy for others to use it if they want to. My knowledge is out of date on it, as I remember it (and SDHelper) used to cause conflicts years ago, but thought it was fixed by now. On the balance, best to go with Gunjack on this and remove it.

I can suggest some better passive protections later on, but for now the main thing to to have an antivirus installed and running!

ok, it's late and I'm a numpty - got 2 threads open and the avg/avast traces were in the log on the other thread

Still maintain it's a 64-bit OS, and teatimer needs to be stoped and there's no AV on there at present :p

Okay great! Thanks for letting me know ;) You had me pouring over the logs and the "orphans removed" part of the Combofix log. The 'BSL homework' thread had a bunch of traces though.

Agreed, "yeah, alright then", and emphatically agreed :)

turn off spybot's teatimer - open spybot > on the Mode (next to File, top bar)> click Advanced > Tools > Resident and untick the box for teatimer.

Are you running 32- or 64-bit Windows 7 ?? hjt log looks like it's 64-bit, but run whichever version of the AVG removal tool (1st or 2nd on the list) as a previous log showed traces of AVG. When you uninstall it it leaves bits behind:-

    http://www.avg.com/gb-en/download-tools

be careful of the many (file missing) entries in hjt, as this is common on 64-bit systems, and fixing these may leave your system knackered :(

Thank you GunJack. I've used the AVG removal tool using the link you gave for 64-bit. I couldn't find the way into Spybot teatimer but I managed to find something going via msconfit and I unticked it there - so I hope that is enough.

This is all very helpful and I really am learning a lot.:)

I've just checked, RussJK and the Microsoft Security Essentials is working 'fully protected' it says and runs automatically on Sunday mornings at 2 o'clock. I'm actually beginning to understand a wee bit about what I'm doing - with guidance of course!:rotfl:

    Thank you again.

..........Too much pride coming before a fall for me (RussJK and GunJack!) I've just noticed that I need to reinstall Microsoft Windows Essentials to all the time. I'll do that right now using the link you gave then I'll do a HJT and post the log - if that's OK.
Does it mean that, eventually, I should consider uninstalling MWE and have AVAST instead?
