I think I've made my points here and have made the mistake of not reading through the thread. I apologise for that. I also apologise for making fun of your job - obviously it works well for you and your DD as a single mother and yes, how do I know what jobs you've done in the past?
I suppose coming from a background (PA related) we don't have a union as such and the one union I *do* know of isn't of much use (only got info about it from my stepdad, who works for the civil service.
My one bugbear (no, not aimed at you) is that all too often employees run to a union when sometimes there is no need for it, and the employer themselves can maybe think of trouble being caused by this happening.
I had no idea at the beginning you were a single parent and no form of other childcare available.
I was, as stated merely pointing out the lack of jobs out there and what I, personally would do above and beyond to keep my job. But it's my opinion, not yours.
I hope everything goes well for you in your job with this meeting happening or not and I apologise for offending you.
Thank you for your apologies. I came here first for advice and contacted my union and HR as a second source. My union wont be taking action unless my management does something out of order and I got basic advice. I'm not the type to run straight to a union, i've only been with this one since I've been doing the job I do because I was concerned about them letting me go due to an injury last year. I've never needed nor been a member before this job.
I also hope that I've altered your perspective on people who work in jobs like mine, some do it because it suits them, not because its all they can do.

I have not read all the posts here, but going on the details that I have picked up that it is a small retail business and the meeting is for one hour before the shop opens on a Sunday I think the employer is just being silly. He probably thinks that everybody who works for him/her is so glad of a job and feels so prividged to be asked to a "meeting" that they will never say anything and just work it for free. Also a meeting for an hour seems just far to long. If he/she was paying for it it could likely be reduced to 15 minutes.0

Mistral the OP stated the meeting was for 3 hours.
I've experienced similar myself. Where staff work shifts or different hours, you simply can't accommodate everyone. There will always be those poor unfortunates who ordinarily would not be at work.
It sounds like the manager is both inexperienced and trying to be a 'new broom'. I think the law is with the OP but nonetheless - one's 'card can be marked' in any number of ways.
Whether the OP went or not, she should be looking for a new job.0 -
Hi everyone,
The issue at the time regarding staff meeting was resolved with the fact that I didnt go. I was also surprised to find out after the event that no paperwork was done, majority of training was aimed at supervisors upwards and they had a demo with the coffee machine, and it lasted about an hour, all in all irrelevant to my job position.
Since this point however my paperwork was only completed a couple of weeks ago prompted by me supplying some additional paperwork myself as Upper management (above my unit manager) had made a comment threatening my position in the company to the assistant manager because I work shorter hours to the normal shift. His words were "Well I'll soon sort that out." So to ensure that they couldn't use my empty file to force me to work outside what I normally can do I resorted to putting it in writing again.
So although the initial thread question has passed, it does provide source of information regarding opinions for further events down the line. So thank you all for your comments I appreciate them
