Pretty much all phones manufactured within the last year (except Iphone) use micro-usb charger. I believe it's supposed to be the standard for all phones manufactured starting in 2011.

It is but there is the get out that phone can have a non standard port as long as it has an adapter in it.

So for an Iphone they can keep the apple dock connector as long as they put a micro usb adapter in the box too.

Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids are pretty much the norm now, both for NHS and privately-bought hearing aids, so no need for earphones !
  • Whole problem comes from phone batteries. Many companies use cheap batteries for their entry level phones, and these batteries have special (not supported from USB) requirements for impedance and current rating.

ok - thanks for the links. I see they are finally coming into implementation. It seems incredibly wasteful, especially environmentally, for the companies not to have done this before, given that all the technology has been available for years.

Not sure what you meant by "finally coming into implementation", I had a Sony Ericsson I got back in 2005 and it was able to be charged up by USB, I then had a nokia two years later and that was also chargeable via computer USB port. There may have been models before then which were also able to be charged by computer but I didn't have computer access at home until 2007 so wouldn't have known either way, but the SE I definetly got in 2005 was fine to charge this way.
