why don't phones have usb chargers?

ok - thanks for the links. I see they are finally coming into implementation. It seems incredibly wasteful, especially environmentally, for the companies not to have done this before, given that all the technology has been available for years.0

Don't know about Nokias and Samsungs, but the most basic 2 y.o. SE J132 can be charged.yes smartphones have them - but i don't like smartphones. I prefer standard phones.
And with those - especially the recent nokias and samsungs, even if they have a usb port - you will find that you cannot charge through them, only transfer data. You have to use their power adapter and their power port.0 -

Pretty much all phones manufactured within the last year (except Iphone) use micro-usb charger. I believe it's supposed to be the standard for all phones manufactured starting in 2011.0

My basic 5-year old phone has a USB charging & data cable... So long as the USB 5V 500mA supply is suitable, surely a USB charging cable could be made for any phone...?0

I am glad the EU is doing something about it - but it has been in the pipeline for 4 years now.
My last two cheap Nokias both charged via USB and so does my current LG.
The reason it is taking so long to agree a standard is more to do with the electrical specifications. (The capacity of batteries, and therefore charging currents, varies. Compromises have to be agreed. )0 -
Samsung Tocco does via USB.
Where my gripe is with all these mobiles is headphones having special phone only fittings rather than standard headphone jacks.

I agree there! Although seeing as my phone is 5.9mm thick, fitting even a 2.5mm socket would be pretty darn tricky!0 -

Did have a Sony Ericsson with an adaptor which allowed 2 standard headphone jacks. It is not being able to use earphones that suit me (I have hearing aids) that is my real gripe.Truth always poses doubts & questions.
