You don't have to be English to represent an English constituency, just as you don't have to be Scottish to represent a Scottish one.

Can a foreign national become UK prime minister?

I think so, if they're from the Republic of Ireland or a Commonwealth citizen they can be an MP. I don't know if there are any restrictions on which MPs can be PM though.

presumably, then, yes. the political parties themselves may have different rules on who is eligible to be a candidate for them, and who can be elected as their leader, but these will not be matters of statute.

scotland couldnt support itself, at best they would have to split the oil with britain (thats if they get any of it) and the oil is running out anyway. scotland has no military, the nuclear weapons are british so we could just move them south. there would be no lottery funding for scottish athletes( so thats only A Murray and C Hoy) and they dont even have any football players worth mentioning. the best uni graduates would travel south so there would be a shortage of talent etc.

If Scotland did go independent, would this mean that Scots would not be allowed to become UK MPs?

Assuming Scotland stayed in the EU there is nothing stopping a Scot, or any EU national for that matter running for parliament. Nor is there be any legal reason a English person could not run for the Scottish parliament.

Really? Look up "Convention on the Territorial Sea and Contiguous Zone" (Territorial waters), the law states that 14miles from the base land is regarded as the sovereign territory of the state. So by international law it would belong to Scotland.

Neither does Ireland... although they do have a defence force!

Why wouldn't there still be lottery funding? Do you think companies south of the border will want to cut their revenue streams short by excluding Scotland?

Funnily after a quick google the BBC knocked up a document back in 2007 about a "Scottish divorce"

True, although I took the question to mean MP's from constituancies in Scotland.

Does Scotland actually have much of an economy?

That is if you discount oil and banking.

Get the impression that the more ambitious ones would not be that interested in representing such a tiny little country with very little worldwide influence.

LOL, are you hoping that's the case?
