The start of the Autumn term is in September - which means, if I've understood everything correctly, that DS1's dad will have completely misunderstood what's happening, cancelled the holiday he had booked for September, booked a new holiday for July and set a precedent regarding taking DS1 out of school for 'jollies'.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it but if mum and dad both have parental responsibility then if dad takes the child out of school and the school/LEA decide to fine the parents then BOTH mum and dad will be fined.

I have seem this happen. mum & dad were estranged/separated & the mum took the child on an unauthorised holiday. Both parents were fined £100 (2 weeks). The first dad knew of the holiday was when he received the fine. He tried to appeal but to no avail. He has joint parental responsibility ( despite being currently unable to get reasonable access to his child) and so the LEA said he should have exercised his parental rights and ensured his child was in school and not on an unauthorised holiday.

And how is a parent supposed to do that from hundreds of miles away?

I absolutely agree with you Daska!!! However I was pointing out to you what could happen potentially. In the case I know of, the dad tried to argue there was nothing he could do due to access problems, he was unaware that the child was out of school on holiday and he lived about 40 miles away. Nonetheless he was still fined. Bl00dy unfair in my opinion.

Sorry Zsiggi, that wasn't supposed to come out the way it did, my flabber was gasted at the imbecility of suggesting that a parent who lives 200 miles away should be capable of knowing exactly what the PWC is doing at all times.

I think I might be having a chat with DS1

    Priceless!

The 'reason' for changing the holiday was to fit in with the august start date at the new school. I've just had a call from the school and we did work out why DS1's dad might have thought it was August ... but it isn't, it's September.

Sorry you've lost me too. You mentioned on your opening post it was the last week of summer term in July your ex wished to take out your son for. Not that I've experienced Secondary school yet, but in Primary on the last day all mine do is word searches and watch a dvd (which I totally understand I realise teachers are on their last day too) and I have read posts by Secondary school teachers saying that is what they would do in the last week too, so is your DS really going to miss much if anything?

Casks with regard to the leaving school an hour early for a family event (has this happened yet?) why would you actually need his permission?
