Adopt the mentality that I have started to adopt. Think long term and it should be worth it. When those kids grow up and those families are no longer entightled to tax credits and child benefit hopefully you will be left with a large salary and a great lifestyle that you have earned. Those that have relied on such credits wont be getting that.

It is indeed what I focus on, but then my ex and his girlfriend are almost 40, by the time they will not be entitled to tax credits any longer, they will be entitled to all the pension benefits!
Please don't think it wasn't worth it! You can look back at what you've achieved with a sense of pride and your children will have a better attitude to work and education because of your example.

You may not be better off financially because of it (and I don't think that's fair) - but you are better off in terms of self-esteem

I hold on to that too, but when I come home completely shattered and have to restrict my social life (not talking about nights out, I don't drink!) during the week-ends because otherwise I am rested enough to start the week again, I do feel a bit bitter, but I agree, I wouldn't think for a second to trade, pride is a big motivator and I hang on to the day the mortgage will be paid in full, this will be the day our lives change and we finally enjoy the rewards!
