I think your missing the point.

If he is just over the limit by say £1000 then he could sacrafice the £1000 to keep £2500. Also dont forget, to lose that £2500 he would need to earn £5000 gross more to stay on the same wage. It is a sensible option and hopefully one that is available to do. It is a scandle that they are prepared to take the easy option and take money like this from families with single earners while leaving families with dual earners who earn more untouched. I still dont think they will do it, or not at least in this guise.

I guess ''they'' think that someone earning over 40K a year shouldn't need the benefit payments!?

I should have quoted the poster I was replying to but didn't because it was immediately above mine. I agree that it would've been clearer if I had.

No, its nothing to do with clarity. You said they wouldnt be able to salary sacrifice which is wrong. They doint have to salary sacrifice 30K, they can (as I pointed out) salary sacrifice 1K and save themselves a 5K paycut

There is 1 person earning 40K. Given thier child benefit is worth 2500 per year this means they have 3 or 4 kids.

To lose 2500 in a year is the equivalent of them taking a 5000 paycut which is ab out an 11 - 12% paycut.

If you think a family with a single earner and 3 - 4 kids can just take a 11 - 12% paycut like that then you are living in cloud cuckoo land.

    You are rude!

Everyone has to expect to make sacrifices to help the country get back on it's feet. £41k a year is hardly the breadline, and if it is then the ''parents'' have made very bad choices along the way, or are living well beyond their means.

OP, if you are concerned about losing £2500 in benefits, is there a reason why your wife cannot get a job? Even if she only worked at minimum wage, she would only need to work nine hours per week to make up the difference.

But it's not 'everyone' though is it! We are not all in this together!! Some are paying more than others!

    this is money link

Thanks that is a helpful link.

I wonder about the charitable contributions though. As it stands, each year I donate about £3800 via gift aid to various organisations. If I change into the higher rate tax band is there money that i can claim back?

My wife looks after the children and home eds them. So we are already saving lots of money for the government!
