Having got a domain name, you need to point it to a website and also to an email server. Chances are your ISP gives you a webspace allowance which can be used for your website, and you will have email somewhere already.
For example. Your current ISP is elcheapo.co.uk and gives you 100Mb of webspace with the webaddress of smith.elcheapo.co.uk, and you have a hotmail email address me@hotmail.com. You purchase the domain foobar.co.uk via the company dreg.co.uk. On the dreg.co.uk website, there will be a login where you can administer your domain (foobar.co.uk). In the admin settings, you point the foobar.co.uk webaddress to your website at smith.elcheapo.co.uk and set up an email redirection to send any foobar.co.uk email to me@hotmail.com.0 -

I've used them with no problems for registering domains and pointing to hosting.
they are generally one of the best priced domain name suppliers out there.
I would heartily recommend them
I have only been using 123reg for a short while and the support is dreadful. Emails go unanswered and you can only phone them via a 50p a minute premium rate phone number.0 -

Most ISPs give you free web space and email accounts so all you have to do is use 1and1 to point to your free web space and email. Then set your reply address in outlook/outlook express to your domain email address. You can also set up an auto responder which lets people know that their emails to you have arrived. This is very useful when you are on holiday.
eg. myname@myisp.co.uk is pointed to by myname@mydomain.co.uk
and
http://mywebspace.myisp.co.uk is pointed to by https://www.mydomain.co.uk
Have had no problems with 1and1 and you can get cashback if you order via Quidco.0 -

Indeed, I found 1 in 3 E-Mails to them go unanswered, the rest take 3-7 working days, and none of the responses were relevant to the questions. They just seem to be copied and pasted responses about common problems, some written in badly translated English.
I never tried the phone support, I didn't want to pay 50p/min when I was fixing their mistake anyway. I just wrote to them saying they had 7 days left to sort the problems or I would take them to court. Got a very fast and apologetic phone response then and finally the correct action taken.
Shame my experience of their sister company WebFusion did not go as smoothly, but that is another story.Windows is the path to the darkside...Windows leads to Blue Screen. Blue Screen leads to downtime. Downtime leads to suffering...I sense much Windows in you.0 -

ok guys i am new to all this but i am interested in setting up a website! But i am stuck! What do I do once I have bought a domain? Can I use a free webhosting and change the address? thanks0

There are people who used to do this at the beginning of the dotcom boom, they used scour the football club's websites/museums/u16 match reports and then when an offer like this came up, they would spend hundreds buying websites in good young player's names: like the guy who bought waynerooney.com after watching rooney play in an u16 game. Sold it to Wayne last year for 10 grand (I think)!

Still happens but it is much more organised, there is also drop catching which uses groups of servers to catch expiring domains to then sell them on for a lot of money. I have written code for drop-catching systems before, they are getting very clever.Windows is the path to the darkside...Windows leads to Blue Screen. Blue Screen leads to downtime. excellent value for money!
Nice price shame about the customer service!
I used 1and1 for a few years but had to give them the boot for their appaling lack of customer service. They are the worst company by far that I've used for my hosting.Martin0
