Is it better to be presented with an engagement ring or to choose one together?

OH proposed with a ring, we had talked about getting married and i had a ring which i used to wear on the other hand - one day it went mysteriously missing which i later found out he had taken it to get sized. He bought a beautiful ring and proposed with it. It was much more romantic than having to go ring shopping. I guess it depends on the girl:DStolen the OH's account so it's Jenna - not Neil:D0

I'm not engaged and have never been proposed to, but I have an idea in my head of the type of ring I would like which I don't think my OH knows, so I would prefer for him to propose and we choose the ring together.
The only reason for this is that if he were to choose something which I don't like, I don't like to make people feel bad or awkward so I wouldn't want to say anything!
However, just to know that my OH had put the time and thought into choosing a ring for me would probably overrule any dislike for a ring!0 -
I meant to say in my previous post! My friend and her partner have already chosen and bought the ring together, it's just the proposal itself which will be a surprise!0

I had a lovely romantic idea
Take her to London for a night in a fancy hotel and propose with a cheap ring, then take her shopping to Hatton Garden the next day to shop for the ring together. That way she gets to choose the ring and hopefully come home with the correct size right away!

We chose my ring together after the proposal.
I am fairly sure that I'd have loved whatever ring my DH chose but it must be a lot of pressure for the men to get it right! My proposal was beautiful and instead of a ring, I was presented with a card of things we've achieved together, things he thought of me and things we had to look forward to together.
Initially, I was looking at emerald cut solitaires and trilogy rings but in the end my DH found a stunning princess cut solitaire which I absolutely love! We bought it online and had a bit of a wait until I got it (due to living abroad and collecting the ring from my Mums!) but it was worth it and he opened the ring to check it was stunning before I was allowed to wear it! (That weekend coincided with my wedding dress fitting and the first look around the venue so was awesome and I'm sat here smiling at the memory!).

Women talk about this stuff enough, if you listen, eventually you'll just know what kind of ring you should buy - so I was pretty confident getting one by myself - and I liked the idea of a "traditional" proposal more than a modern, practical one. I even had the ring sized (Tiffany won't take it back once it's resized) I was that sure of myself.0

Thanks for all the comments. I explained that if we get married "in future" (as we had discussed it anyway) I would need to know her ring size, so we popped into a jewellers and had her finger measured (K). I also found out she prefers white gold to yellow gold. While she knows a proposal will be coming at some point, at least she has this to look forward to and I can buy the right size and colour. :-)0

When she says she prefers white gold, does she mean that or platinum...platinum is a much heaver metal than white gold but does tend to be better than some white golds as they have a tendancy to need replating if worn continually to keep them looking their best...not a huge problem if the engagement ring isn't worn to do the washing etc but factor in a white gold wedding ring so as not to mix metals and she wont want to keep removing that all the time ...although one advantage of white gold is its not so heavy to wear....frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
