Is it better to be presented with an engagement ring or to choose one together?

Like others have said, I think it depends if it's going to be a surprise proposal or not. My fiance and I had discussed getting married for about a year before hand and he was constantly trying to get hints about what I liked, even outright asked me my ring size! I'm a real jewellery fiend so in the end he took me out ring shopping which I loved, when else do you get to try on lots of lovely diamonds! I tried lots on and he saw what I like but he went back to purchase one in secret so I still didn't know which one I was getting, and I still didn't know when the proposal would be so it turned out to be a lovely romantic surprise:) And the ring fitted so I could wear it right away!
If it's a complete surprise though, I think it would be really lovely to buy a cheapy Accessorize ring to propose with, and then go ring shopping together, you know her best though!0 -
My OH knew that I wanted to choose the ring. So he bought a cheap stand in ring and proposed with that. We then chose the proper ring the next day.0

I would rather choose my own. I don't like surprises.0

Not sure how he would get it out of his pocket.
Unless he said excuse me for 2 minutes while I blow it up and then I'll propose.0 -
I'm getting married next year for the second time, and had 2 totally different proposals.
First time, he didn't have a ring, didn't get down on one knee, and we picked the ring together. Also had quite a large 'budget'.
Second time h2b had picked the ring, snuck out a ring I already have to compare size, and bought the most beautiful ring. Not as expensive as the first one but so much more loved because he picked it himself.
He got down on one knee, presented me with the ring and I have to say it was so much more meaningful and romantic than us picking a ring together.
But only my opinion obviouslycarpe diem

We had decided to get married so he asked if I wanted to choose or if he would have to go it alone - given I expect to wear it pretty much everyday for the rest of my life I decided to choose it myself. After a long time looking we found it, bought it and then he hid it and told me I'd just have to wait! So although the proposal wasn't a surprise as such he still got down on one knee and popped the question - safe in the knowledge he knew the answer!0

Haha...she has a habit of losing things, so might not have the ring for life. :rotfl:

i had same idea as Pootleflump Haribo ring a nice idea.
My OH proposed with a ring but we had already talked about it and window shopped. After reading this thread i have now been thinking i would have liked to have chose together more for the memory as think would prob have the same ring either way. As others have said you no your OH the best but im sure she will be happy with what you decide to do.
pink princess is right you should show her this thread after as it really shows how much you have thought about it.Married the man of my dreams 27/08/20110 -
I popped the question to my OH! Had he asked the question he wouldn't of picked the ring. I have very small fingers. As it was the shop offered me two options One: to have the ring they had in stock resized by two sizes this would of left it oval in shape and a slight gap down the sides.
Two: to have one made and shipped from the US at no extra cost it did mean I had to wait 6 weeks for it but it was well worth it. If you are going to get a ring make sure you know the right size:kisses3: Married 29th September 20120
