hun, try a barrier such as Vaseline. Salt baths are soothing and so are Epsom salt baths. I wouldnt use the steroid creams - my son had excma and the steriod creams prescribed didnt help at all - I finally found that either soya oil or olive oil had more effect.
  • thankyou, i guess im gonna go raid my chemists tomorrow lol, i know they have bepanthen and kamollisan nappy creams ( i used to use the purple tubed nipple cream on nappy rash-it did say you could, cos once bf was established i didnt need it and i wasnt wasting £10!!). will also ask the pharmacist as shes very good and soooo helpful!

I would consider leaving the nappy off altogether, get bed mats. If it is red raw you could try unscented etc talcum powder to stop it rubbing/chaffing as this will help to dry it out so it can heal. My son was very bad on one particular occassion and I found that the cream didnt help was making it worse, so followed my mothers advice of talc and it helped alot.

Another vote for metanium here. Bepanthen and sudocrem didn't work at all on my DD.

Morhulin is also excellent - you will probably have to order it in at Boots, will arrive the next day. It really is worth ordering though, worked like magic!

Could an oat bath work? Put some oats in a muslin and allow the bath water to run over them, it helps soothe the skin due to an agent in the oats...To keep him in a bit longer you could play bath games or get in with him?

Do you think that the skin has got infected? I see a lot of this as a peadiatric nurse in the community! It may be worth going back to the GP incase you need to get a topical cream with some antibiotic in it. I would definately stay away from Aqueous Cream and bath emollients such as Oilatum as these will just dry the skin out more and will irratate ++ if the skin has broken down and is bleeding. Sure that you are already doing this but don't add anything to his bath water and stay away from baby wipes until the skin is totally healed, stick to water and cotton wool if possible. Good luck !!

What nappies are you using? If not using Pampers you might want to for a while - not the most MSE but somethings are more important than money.

My DD used to suffer quite badly, and we used to get an anti-fungal cream as it seemed to get infected. May be worth another trip to the dr's and tell them it's not going away, it sounds like it may need something more than what you can buy over the counter x

Vote here for metanium too. Fantastic but stinks.
There is a fabulous barrier cream, comes in on little sticks like a swab too called Cavilon. I think prescription only GP gave to one of my DD`s after a bad bad rash.
