Ensuring that the people living in their properties are actually the tenants they have registered, and if not kicking them out and prosecuting the "landlords" for stealing public money.
It's not practical. They rely mostly on people reporting fraud, which happens less often than it should.poppy100 -
How can they do that? Should Sheffield council be going round all 93,000 council homes and demanding photo proof of id from all the occupants?

Give the job to private sector debt collectors or similar, paid on results it could be self financing with demands for back rents and the reduced reliance of having to pay private landlords.0 -
the bit that takes me to the fair is how none of them seem to know how to use a vacuum cleaner, lift things up off the floor or tidy where they live...
as for the pregnant blonde girl...in debt, can't afford the rent, wants a nicer house, boyfriend unemployed....
my daughter doesn't have a boyfriend, isn't pregnant, has massive debts (student loans) would love a nicer place to live but its all she can afford on her wage but she doesn't whinge, expect society (tax payers) to house and feed her and automatically get everything for free. In all honesty she probably gets little more than the blonde on handouts....at the end of the day its a choice people make and their upbringing that points them in certain directions. No two ways about this one: Anything Free is not a Basic Right..it had to be earned...by someone, somewhere0 -

But the problem highlighted in the programme was nothing to do with unpaid rents. It was people who have a council property, pay the council rent on time but then sub let the property to someone else at a big profit.0 -
That was absolutely disgusting! I could not believe it! How did he manage to keep the flat in the first place, let alone sublet it? Absolutely no excuse for that! PC Holt is just plain greedy!this is making me feel sick and angry, that pc stephen holt has a council house, owns the flat opposite and a big house in france
and another place in the uk also0 -

Dunno about Sheffield but my own Social Landlord does exactly that: pops round unannounced and requests to see photo ID on the doorstep. I've lived here for 30 years and they've been round several times. I don't have a problem with that at all: I see it as an appropriate use of resources0 -
I like the way most of the posters on here focus their ire on the people who haven't had good educations, have probably lived in pretty poor places their whole lives and had poor parents setting the wrong example.
Rather than the absolutely priviliged people who are fradulently obtaining council houses and renting them out illegaly at huge profit. Did it estimate 50,000 properties across the country are in this position? The scum doing that should be the ones people are furious with. But as usual in right wing Daily Mail dominated Britain that is totally ignored!0 -
He deserves to be kicked out of the force, what an absolute disgrace! There are homeless people in hostels and sleeping on sofa's and worse the streets, when PC Holt owns so many properties and is ILLEGALLY subletting them!! Talk about greedy, he only pays £91 a week for a flat in central london, and is charging others hundreds! I am wondering how he managed to go part time, as that's not easy. Probably spun his superiors a line or two.Did anyone actually listen to the pragram? Or did you just shout at the TV? Does anyone have any comment to make on the cheats who are subletting council properties for private profit? Such as the fine, upstanding pillar of law enforcement and hard work, PC Holt?0
