It seems the whole system is bent, and the programme just confirmed what a housing officer tells me. Tenancies to the wrong people who know how to work the system, subletting, and billions to BTL landlords. How would you reform it? What if you had to be working to get a council tenancy? Where would you then house the unemployed?
    Been away for a while.

It just means spending money or giving money away intentionally to be entitled to claim for something which had you not done so you would not have been entitled to.

    Thanks for that,

Well lets hope we won't get clobbered with that then :(.

What annoys me is the likes of those on there...been on waiting list for 15 years for overcrowding but continues to spit kids out for the fun of it..and who pays for them kids in the meantime???
I mean seriously when did the tax payer become children in need!!!
Then she has the audacity to moan about the situation.

There is a simple solution to that love...condoms!

Grrrr!!!!!!! Best get off my soapbox before I get slated

    Virtual Hi-five!!!

That comment made me chuckle...but being a little diplomatic I would say only for those who choose to be unemployed!!

I glad I am not the only one that spotted the flat screen tv's .My mum was very lucky to get a coucil house many years ago thanks to a good councilor and his view was he wanted to help people that help themselves and my mum worked very hard .Nowadays all these people on the show expect to be housed just because they have too many children then they expect their lazy unemployed children to get housed and we were suppose to feel sorry for them .Get a train ticket and move to an area with jobs and rent a room . The the lazy pregnant blonde cow who thought it was her god given right to get housed whilst watching her giant tv every night .

Seems like you almost certainly will, since they're aware of your planned holiday and have advised you to cancel it. If you go ahead anyway they may well refuse to rehome you. Not saying this is fair, just be careful!

    Thanks for the advice,

I just hope not, we already work all the hours we can and saving for 10 days in a 2 star hotel is our only family time we have.

    Que sera, sera :o

A genuine question - when did being a council house tenant start being a bad thing? I was brought up in a council house, as were most of my friends. We lived in lovely, well kept houses with tidy gardens. We had like-minded neighbours. Went to Sunday school. Dad worked. Mum stayed at home. When I got married we lived in a council house for 8 years, until we bought our first house in 1995. I didn't feel like a chav (not that i'd have known what one was). My husband worked but wasn't paid enough to be able to buy anywhere. There are plenty of decent people who live in council housing, yet I don't think i'd ever want to go back to one now. Not that i'm a snob (because I know where I started out and i'm not ashamed of it), but because of the reputation that seems to come with living in a council house nowadays.

JackieB - Personally, I don't think being in a council house IS a bad thing (I guess, technically speaking, council tenants are "better" than me anyway, as I'm in Housing Association property:o). Most of my schoolfriends were from council-houses and all my neighbours in this small HA development are lovely and a delight to know.

Before my (somewhat spectacular) fall from grace, I had a lifestyle populated with actors, theatre directors, politicians, minor (and, on the odd occasion, major) Royalty and the super-rich. With a few exceptions I can honestly say that I would rather go out for a drink with any of my Housing Association neighbours than the majority of people from my former life. Indeed, it was largely those from the so-called 'posh' lifestyle who occasioned my nervous breakdown.

The distinction lies with those individuals who have babies, for whom they make no effort to care on even the most basic level, merely to secure themselves better housing and more benefits; those individuals who ARE able to work but are either too idle or too unwilling to help themselves to a decent existence; and/or those who are outright liars or thieves and can see nothing wrong in this.

Every single person, regardless of the circumstances in which they were born, grew up, or now exist, has the capacity to be honest and decent. Sadly, the choices that some make for themselves and their unfortunate offspring render them unlovable to others.

I wish the media didn't make sweeping statements about social circumstances, religions, or nationalities. Unhappily, they do. But WE don't have to. And I am sorry for those who both judge and ARE judged thoughtlessly.

Blimey - I'm getting all deep! Sorry about that... Here's a joke to lighten us up:

Who would win a fight between a Rat and a Hedgehog? The hedgehog would win... but only on points.

There is a huge gap between the rents for social housing and private here in London. I am not surprised that council tenants sub let. Rent for 1 beds in zone 1 can fetch upto £350 per week!

This is also why social housing is so sought after. Your looking at almost double the rent to be in private housing. There is little incentive to leave a social tenancy to go private due to this.

They didn't cover the huge number of houses where dependants have gone and rooms lie empty when working couples could more than afford a mortgage but stay paying the lower rent rates, I expected to see this.

The price difference in rent is outrageous between social and private. There seems to be no middle ground at all.
    Wishing you all good luck!
