    Hi, ok lets try a couple of things first. On the downloaded file i presume it is called calibre-0.8.0.msi (it may be described as a windows installer file or such like depending if you have hidden file types) press and hold the left shift key and right click on the file using the right mouse button. If there is an uninstall entry run that, then do the same and select run as administrator. Let us know what happens if anything.

    I bought mine a couple of days ago knowing that the sony readers are better with PDF's but I was swayed by people saying the kindle screen was superior.

    The current generation sonys and Kindle use the same screen, there is no difference. As you say, the sony is slightly better for PDFs. Having said that as someone who owned a sony reader, I couldn't go back to it because of all the fussing around with kindle. Even when getting books off my Calibre library, I just use my web-browser.

    I must admit I love my Kindle - its great to be able to adjust the size of the text when you need it (ie cant be bothered to find my reading specs or just tired!) I subscribe to a blog which updates all the new free Amazon books - you have to be quick - I got Jeffrey Archers Kane and Abel and The Life of Pi recently for free. I am definitely reading a wider variety of books than I used to.

    I got my kindle at christmas and liked it, but it really came into its own last week on holiday. We were travelling with hand baggage only, so not having to carry enough books for a week was a real boon. On the beach, the kindle is much more comfortable to read than a book. It's lighter, you can page turn with one hand and it can be read from much further away with the text size being adjustable (useful to lay it on the ground when you are cooking your back). If you fancy a different book, the Amazon shop is there on the beach or in the hotel room with you.

    I was amazed at how usable the web browser is. I ended up using it often in preference to my smart phone. Given the navigation limitations of the basic keyboard, a lot of thought has been put into making it usable. It takes a little practice, but navigation soon becomes second nature.

    I really don't understand the 'I'll never have a Kindle, I love books too much' argument. It doesn't have to be an either/or. I love books too and won't stop buying them, but the benefits of the kindle in terms of portability are fantastic. Just as MP3 players will never replace proper stereo systems (and proper stereo systems will never replace live music) but each allow music lovers more, easier and convenient ways of listening to music, so it is with Kindle and books (or really that should be with Kindle and reading).

    Download calibre and drm plug in, download adobe digital media, then join some e-libraries = free books every week.I have joined 4 libraries online and use calibre and its plugins to convert the ebooks into mobi for my kindle.

    Libraries that let you join online even when you don't live within their local area are:

    Bexley - send a/number and pin by email;
    essex -send a/number and pin by email;
    North yorkshire - send card and pin by post
    hertfordshire - send card and pin by post

    This has saved me a fortune.

    I love the feel of a book, so I'm not a kindle fan either OP.

    It's fair to say that all right-thinking people don't like the Kindle.
