(You can hack the firmware of the Kindle to support epub & pdfs as well, but most won't either.)

    Kindle supports PDF.

I love mine, it's got me reading far more than I did before, and it's much easier to just buy a book if I've got a quiet evening rather than having to head to bookshops/wait for delivery.

    Kindle supports PDF.

I know it does, but the hack I mentioned (Duokan) is used primarily by some people for its superior PDF support - so it was worth saying so.

Reportedly it has improved text flowing and faster display:

I love the feel of a book, so I'm not a kindle fan either OP.
  • I love my Kindle, I got it from work as a trial device to evaluate the email/conversion stuff. I simply wouldn't be without it now, I haven't bought an ordinary book for over 6 months, instead I've downloaded squillions of classics that I always meant to read for free. I've paid for a few books too but it's saved me an absolute fortune both in cash and, indirectly, the cost of more shelves for my books.

Well done to the OP for saying that they don't like the Kindle.

Everyone else seems to be in the "I love my kindle" mode when they may be rationalising spending a lot of money for what is no more than an expensive toy. I love it when they say "you can download thousands of books", but you can only read 3 or 4 a week maximum.

On the other hand, if the Kindle does get more people reading books then it has to be a good thing (TM)

Personally I'm waiting until the technology matures (and the price goes down) and ebooks can be loaned from an on-line library.

I love my Kindle and I love real books, the advantage for me is that I can take a lot of books on holiday without getting charged for excess baggage. I always used to have a book with me now I have a collection and I can carry my photography books ( real one's weigh a ton) it's like the advent of the iPod, I used to have a cd walkman and a couple of cd's now I have 700 albums in my handbag technology is fantastic.

Agreed I love my Kindle for what it does and that it simplifies things, lightens my bags etc but I still love the sheer contentment I feel when I can curl up on my sofa with a 'proper' book and get lost in the sensations of handling the pages, the smell etc as well as the actual words on the page.

As for how many books you can read on it - that would depend entirely on how fast you can read, and how long you spend reading it - I got through one decent length novel at work this afternoon, and am half way through another from travelling home this evening (I do however read unusually quickly).
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

Well I'm still persevering. Will agree that the Kindle wins on convenience, but ordinary books still win on the pleasure of reading.

I've trawled through the free books and downloaded some of the old classics to re-read and will watch the 100 bestselling free list.

As far as physical ease of reading goes, I am finding it easier holding with one hand and forwarding with other thumb as required. I had assumed that you held it with both hands and were able to click with your thumb, hardly moving your hand, but this would have required the forward button much further up the Kindle.

I fail to see how you can have problems with the page turning.
Holding mine in my left hand now and my thumb rests on the page foreward button.

    My wife has one now.
previously the house was full of books, I got 2 large bookcases last year so I could try and house some of them.
We are now in the process of ebaying most because she has them all as ebooks to read on her Kindle she loves it.

with over 5000 ebooks on her laptop, managed with Calibre in whatever format they are - converted for the Kindle she can read any book she wants and I can get to bed in the dark without tripping over books & injuring myself :)

    Some like it some dont.
It's bought my wife from being a technophobe to using her computer, downloading, converting, archiving etc a heck of a lot more.
Now we can talk about real issues that matter rather than just what happened today :D
