Hubby just gone to the cinema with £10....

and I feel so guilty. We are currently trying to scrape ourselves out of debt, as well as trying to get our garden finished by the end of summer. I said to him last week, if we save really hard this month we can get the rest of the fence replaced and our garden will finally be secure on all sides.
Fast forward to tonight, and he's gone to the cinema with his friend. I offered him something quick for tea about 7 ish (just something on toast) and he refused saying he wasn't hungry.
Now before he left he came asking me of we had any more money in case he 'fancies some popcorn at the cinema'. We I kind of saw red and repeated what I had said about the garden, then I also politely chipped in that if they had gone on an orange wednesday they would all have money for popcorn lol.
Just needed a vent really, men are silly sometimes ....

You should have told him to get a cheapo bag from Tesco and take it in with him.0

Oh poor you, isn't it horrible to "feel" so mean? It's not always easy to stay calm about these things but don't worry about it now, he's gone and so has the ten spot. Maybe he'll be back with some change but either way you can show where you've adjusted the budget to accomodate his evening out, and try to stay calm about it, but it will be good for him to see the consequence of his action. Also, you'll have to be careful not to come across as sanctimonious when you're doing that (something I once got called) but it's important that he knows.Whatever0

It's only a trip to the cinema and popcorn for goodness sake - it's hardly a night out at a strip club with expensive drinks and knicker tips!
Sometimes, when you've been working hard, it's just nice to enjoy a night out - is that really so bad?
Yes, I'm all for saving money but I also want some enjoyment from my life - perhaps your OH feels the same?:hello:0 -

Did he agree that he wanted the garden done, or does he simply go along with anything at the time just to avoid confrontation, and then just do what he wants later?0

This would vex me also, if we'd agreed not to spend on anything that wasn't necessary he'd soon find himself being dished up beans on toast for tea the next night in order to put the finances back on an even keel.
However, I do agree with the person that said he probably doesn't have enough to buy popcorn out of a tenner if he's had to buy his ticket too...
As it happens, we pay the bills, put some in savings/pay cc bills (depending on how the previous month went!), and allow a minimal amount each for 'fun' money so that things like this don't become bigger arguments that could be avoided, perhaps you could try the same? If he'd said he was spending his 'pocket money on a night out I doubt you'd have felt so aggrieved by it all?0 -

Hope the staff at your local cinema aren't like the ones at mine. They actually search peoples bags and any confectionary that isn't bought there isn't allowed in
Cue me and hubby spotting this going on and scuttling back to car to drop off cheap Asda popcorn bag. Makes me laugh now but was pretty hacked off at the time :rotfl:0 -
Really?? I'm surprised they have the authority to search people's bags. I'd understand this point more if they had a preventative sign up and then caught people removing food from bags to eat, but to search without cause doesn't seem right to me.
I certainly wouldn't be happy or want to comply. Is this a chain or independent cinema.
To the OP, i can see things from both sides, but with you on the fact that you had an agreement to pull back on money this month and then your put in the position of having to sanction it and still not have treats yourself.
What about as another person said you both have set spending for the month to use as you wish and when that's gone.....tough?0 -
wrt food at the cinema, I think there is a line to be drawn.
We went once, to a very crowded screening, and there was some concern from those sitting in front of us that their mate wasn't going to get back in time for the start of the film. He'd been out to buy pizza, and now wasn't being allowed back in.
Popcorn / sweets / bottles of pepsi - no problem. Pizza? :rotfl: No, I think the cinema were right not to let him back in with pizza ...
BTW I don't know why the OP is feeling guilty. She's not the one who's gone to the cinema on a Not Orange Wednesday ...Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
One of the joys of going to the cinema is taking your own carefully handpicked snacks! It takes all of 5 mins to make a big batch of popcorn and flavour it to your own taste :money:, about as long as it takes to make something on toast...Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

Hope is not a strategy
