Chatham and Gillingham are 45-50 mins train journey from Victoria, Cannon Street or St Pancras.
A 2 bed house in an ok area, or a 1 to 2 bed flat in a good area such as Chatham Maritime or Victory Pier Gillingham should be possible for that price point :)

The train ticket is £3000 a year though vs £1500 from a South London suburb.

    Didcot!

It's not a pretty town, but has good shops, and you can get a nice enough 1 bed flat for about £115k. I think it's about 35 minutes to Paddington on the train.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Reading's worth considering too. Pricey fares though (to be expected) - just over £4k if tube's included. Very quick trains into Paddington.

Look into Swanley....30 minutes into Victoria and another train that goes right into Kings Cross...plus, the prices there are very reasonable.

I am looking to buy a flat/house within the next year for around £100K or so, which will need to be around one hour (or less) commute of Central London, around Westminster/charing cross way ideally (overground or tube travel). Is there any particular areas which the friendly MSE community can recommend?

    Thanks very much.
Yes me too. I am thinking of Chatham Maritime. There are some new flats bing built by Berkeley at Victory Pier, which I am thinking of looking at. Supposed to be ready early September and the studio flats are under £100k - I think. Jon

I wouldn't recommend Swanley to my worst enemy, no matter how cheap.
    Been away for a while.

woking? It's meant to be cheaper than Guildford and it's closer. Guildford is going to be pushing it for that budget-I'd be surprised if you could do it on 100k.

  • Hi, for what it's worth I asked the guy who sits next to me at work if he knows Swanley as I know he lives nearby and he said that although it did have some undesirable areas it wasn't that bad and had some very nice parts too.

OP - One thing I wondered, did you mean an hour door to door to Westminster or an hour's train journey to London Terminus as the latter seems to me how some are interpreting your query. My train journey is c35mins but with the walks at each end is over an hour door to door.

Thanks for all the replies. I would like to commute door-to-door within an hour if possible. I may need to look at renting until my salary goes up considerably...
