Problems with visual

Hi again
I'm determined i'm going to get this done!! My camera is a dv camcorder has usb not firewire. When I get footage on the computer I get sound but no visual. I'm hoping it is something simple because i've wasted alot of money on bits and pieces (as I said on a thread last night) Please explain to me in SIMPLE(!) terms what to do or what to buy.
Last night it came up no problem with the little media player sign thing but it had a red cross through it and at the side it said something about compressed(?) and codec. I DO NOT have a clue what this is or if I have it!! Sorry for being stupid.I have downloaded all the discs the camera came with which was about 6 or 7. The camera takes sd cards if that makes a difference. Thank you for reading this and I have my fingers crossed!

Right I just tried again and when I tried to play it it came up with : Video not available cannot find 'VIDS:XVID' decompressor. Is this easy to fix?
I have on my compter: pinnacle instant cd/dvd se version 8.3 ....... Arcsoft photo montage ...... pinnacle studio version 9 se ....... imation ...... opus presenter ...... driver video works 6 presto mr. photo and last but not least Basic digital camera software.

If it wants an XVID codec, this can be got as part of the Nimo pack from http://www.free-codecs.com/Nimo_Codec_Pack_download.htm (use the middle link on the webpage as it works - also contains lots of other useful codecs).

I tried it and it just said an error has occured and to send it to microsoft!????

Rsykes2000 I hade to uninstall it as it wouldn't allow me to do anything. Kept coming up as a security thing and saying it was an unknown publisher. Even when I ignored that and tried it still didn't allow me to do anything. I'm flippin cursed!!!! Thanks anyway.

Download VLC Player and try that.

What format is the file you're trying to play in, windows media file, quicktime, avi?

When you're trying to play the file, I assume you are just clicking on a file in My Computer? e.g. myfile.wmv, or myfile.avi or myfile.mov etc The file type is the bit after the dot. If you can't see that i.e. it just says "myfile" right click on the file and it will tell you the type under "Type of File"

If not then please describe the steps you're doing to open the file you're trying to play

Sorry had to feed the baby. The only thing that I can see is I try to open it on a window that says MPEG1.avi not sure if this is what you mean. It has a red cross through it. It doesn't say anything about files or that yet. I'm at the stage I want to chuck the lot in the bin! I thought it would be as easy as downloading photos. When I put the usb in the camera and pc it automatically goes to what i've described then no more. It automatically brings up mr.photo and videoworks.
