Best way to get this car legal?

I don't want to drive my car if it's not legal to, so I'm looking for some advice. I've tried googling but I'm being sent around in circles. Let me explain.
We bought a car in October, very cheaply. It needed an engine recondition, we knew this at the time of buying the car, and when we added the cost of the engine recon, it was still a bargain. We saved up for it to be done and had the car collected in December. It was taxed and MOT'd at the time. We didn't insure it as it was being transported on a flatbed truck everywhere anyway.
The work was completed in February (for some reason the company had the car for 3months... another long story), and we are waiting until the end of May to get it back on the road properly as I will have an extra year NCB which will make a lot of difference money wise (I drive another car at the moment). Also my OH is a mechanic and has been working on the car to make it 100% again, new brakes etc. When my insurance runs out I will be selling the car I currently use and using the money to finance the insurance on the new car.
The problem I now have is that the MOT and Tax have run out while it has been sat on the driveway. I declared it as SORN last month, however, once we have bought a new battery for it, we want to take it for an MOT and get the ball rolling with getting it road legal so it's not a major rush in a few weeks. I can get temporary insurance to drive it to the test centre and back, and I know it's legal to drive it to the test centre without an MOT if it's a pre-arranged appointment. However, where do I stand with the tax? I can't tax it without the MOT, and as far as I'm aware, I can't drive it to the test centre without the tax. Am I right in thinking this?
If I am right in this, is it legal to get it towed by another car? (all 4 wheels will be on the road). What's the legalities involved in that in regards to tax/insurance?
Also I've been told that if someone else has insurance on their car which covers them to drive any car, that they can drive my car even if it doesn't have it's own insurance policy. I didn't think that was correct?

You can drive without tax to and from a pre-booked MOT test because, as you correctly state, you can't get tax without a valid MOT.
Get your temporary insurance, book your MOT in advance, drive it to the test centre, have it tested, drive it home and park it off road again. Repeat as many times as necessary until it passes.0 -
You can drive it to the mot and back without tax, or present mot.
Depending on what your husbands policy says, if the car is in your name, he can drive it there if he has "driving other cars" on his policy.
Exclusions are now being put in stating "cars not owned by yourself or your spouse", and/or that the "car must have it's own insurance"
Check his polkicy doesn't have any terms like these and he'll be ok.
It's worth putting the paperwork in the car in case he's stopped though.0 -
Thanks for your answers Temporary insurance it is as it was other family members telling me about them being able to drive the car, I think temporary insurance is a safer option anyway as I would be 100% sure. Thanks againMummy to beautiful 5yr old girl and a gorgeous 1yr old boy:D0

Fair enough, but with my insurance I could drive it, admittedly only third party.0

My insurance wouldn't cover me, as it says it will only cover me in another car as long as that car is covered by an insurance policy. Just check the insurance of whoever is driving it - but as you say temp insurance may be safer!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

I have never heard of any policy that allows you to drive another car third oarty only when the othercar hasn't got a valid insurance policy since the NU rider policy devacle od the 90's.
I would double check that Mickey, as it will normally only.mention the ins and out of the other car cover in the terms and conditions. It may say you can drive other cars but if you check the policy bumpff it always says only.if the other car has a valid policy. This is there to stop young lads buying a metro then driving a WRX on the third party only.cover. If you can link to proper proof that a company provids the cover you suggest then please link it. Up till you do that i have to.consider you as wrong on that one.
This is obviously different with a traders policy.
OP, if i was you use a temp policy, this is the best option stay fully legal.
There is no defense in law by saying you read it on the internet.0 -

I can live with you considering me wrong tbh.
Your knowledge is poor, I've have third party cover on other cars without the need for their own insurance continuously for 30+ years now
But for the sake of it, it's esure this year, but I'm moving to CSIS, as esure have just changed their t&c's on my renewal offer to now require insurance on other cars for all new policies before you can drive them third party.
If you want proof, google CSIS, and read their policy t&c's.

So if you are right and had proof why are you.getting arsy mickey.
I have never had this 3rd party for other cars on any policy since a rider pllicy with NU back in the day.
These where stopped due to people insuring a fizzy then riding a GSXR everyday.
This is something anybody that was a courier back in the 80's or 90's will confirm.
I can also confirm that i have never had any insurance policy that says third party to drive any other car on the policy document that doesn't also say in the t&c that the other car must have a vald insurance policy either.
I have asked coppers abiut this and they have all knocked plenty of.people that where deiving like this and not one if thwm has actually been covered to drive the other car.
So you can say my knowledge is minimal it means very little to be honest.
However even if you have found an insurance company that provides this then instead of saying you are covered you shsould have said that you are covered if insured by Esure, or whatever company was concerned.
If you can't see your advise was flawed then don't take it out on me.
Also most of my info on the technicalities of Insurance cover and how it has changed over the years came from my dad.
But hey he only worked for Pearl Assurance for 30 years till he retred, what does he know...............0 -

Maybe you should bring it up to date?
(And re-read the thread properly?
"Exclusions are now being put in stating "cars not owned by yourself or your spouse", and/or that the "car must have it's own insurance"")
Until then, I think we'll "consider you wrong on that one"0 -
I don't need to reread the thread mickey.
I still feel that even if esure allow driving of any car regardless of the other car having valid insurance it is still a sensible position to advise people that the vast majority don't.
This is a simple.fact, also there is the exclusion of the car not belonging to the policyholder also. In which case the OP is also not allowed to.drive.
I am not going to reinsure my car just to see if you are right, but if you say that is wyat it says then i shall take your word for it.
Though as most insurance is actually provided by another company to the one you sign up with then perhaps you coukd let us know what underwriter is mentioned on the certificate.
For example i was insured with Swinton last year and then with Santander this year but the Insurance certificate and therefore the actual Insurance is provided by Equity Red Star.
This is a common thing these days, so there may be a possibility that more Brokers provide this.
Why do yiu want the forum to turn into a !!!!ing contest mickey? Isn't debating in order to get the most accurate information out there for the benefit of all the forum members.
You seem to think i am upset that new information is being presented to me, not really true thouh i don't think asking for you to provide some extra info is such a bad thing.
But i can confirm that Admiral, Santander and Swinton don't provide this cover going by what i have be led to believe.
The reason that is always given when i have enquired, and yes i do check when i buy the Insurance,0
