Frightened, telephoned CCCS
Hello,
I'm new to this site and wondering if you can offer me any help and advice regarding entering into an IVA.
OH and I looked at our debts of £21K and decided enough was enough, it was time to do something about it. After reading various posts on this site, I completed the debt remedy on the CCCS website. Its conclusion was to enter into an IVA. Yesterday they rang us and arranged a telephone appointment for next Friday to talk through our I&E and the IVA.:)
Since the telephone call, I have felt sick, my stomach is in knots and I'm petrified. I know we are doing the right thing, but its entering into the unknown.:(
Also, we are both civil servants and I am wondering do we have to tell our government departments as neither of us works with money?
Any help and advice is appreciated!:j

Hi there & welcome
I don't normally post on this thread, but am sure someone will be here to give the best advice possible.
I would like to say though, good for you and you will get through this.;)
And there is also another thread called debtfreewannabe thread, I believe lots of others are in the same position and have been through the CCCS etc, here;

Actually just above this thread lol.:D;)
Once sorted, it will be like a great weight lifted.
Good luck. The one and only "Dizzy Di"0 -
Hello sweetie, welcome to MSE.
Please don't be frightened. Instead be proud of yourself - for you have taken the first and very difficult step in facing up to the fact that you have a problem and are taking the right steps to solve the issue instead of burying your head in the sand and hiding those bank statements. That is an achievement to do you credit.
I work in local government and have had an IVA for almost four years (nearing the fifth and final year, hurray!). As long as I work in a professional and efficient manner, they couldn't give two hoots about my personal financial problems. I look after several budgets and have NEVER had an issue over my accounts not balancing, any whiff of impropriety or money going astray. I really don't think you have anything to worry about.
To set your mind at rest, however, do have a word with your line manager or the HR department if you are worried. But the fact that you are facing reality and endeavouring to solve your personal issues sensibly speaks highly of you.
No-one is perfect. We all make mistakes - otherwise we wouldn't be human; we'd be divine! But as long as you are beyond reproach at work you shouldn't be affected. I think it's only bank employees, actual county councillors or solicitors who are affected by insolvency issues. Hopefully others with better knowledge than mine will be along to advise you better than I can.
Good luck to you poppet. You won't always feel this wretched, honestly.
PM me if you need to, OK.
Keep smiling,
Roo & Jasper x0 -

Me too, Which. I honestly don't know what I'd have done without this site in my darkest days. Jasper and I will be writing to Her Majesty to request something for Martin from the Honours List in due course - he has done SO much good for desperate folk everywhere, without prostituting himself or his site to spammy advertisers, that he can never be thanked enough, in my opinion.
Good luck to you too. xx0 -
Hi Monkeysox and welcome. As Ruth says, be proud. Recognising you are heading for trouble and being resposible enough to do something about it is an achievement in itself. Once you have had a chat with CCCS things will become much clearer.
I found it all rather alarming to see my "mess" in black and white. In fact I had under estimated my total debt by about half!!!!!
Your Dept. should be OK with it -- in fact the chances are they will never know. I too am in the chains of the civil service and haven't said anything to my "masters" ... to be frank, it's none of their business.
Pop over to https://www.iva.co.uk and you will meet many more in our boat ... many of whom are public servants of one type or another (which says something about our "over generous pay" we are supposed to get!).
Get all the info you can, ask as many questions as you need and all will be fine.0 -
Hello,
A big thank you to Di3004, RuthnJasper and WhichwhydoIturn!::j
I felt a little emotional after I read your posts back to me! I do feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders just by reading your replies, its good to know you are there for support.
I know OH and I have done the right thing, sometimes you just need someone to tell you its going to be ok. I have loads of questions, my head is spinning with them. I'm trying to look ahead thinking all this will settle down in a few months. Any ideas how long the process actually takes until the IVA is agreed and up and running?:rotfl:0 -
Hello Foggybrain,
Thanks for the website, I'll have a look at that! As you say, the more info I get the better!:j
Like you, I feel its none of my departments business either. OH and I have agreed that we wont tell anybody so its nice to come here, talk about it and be able to ask for advice.:)

I, too, did the CCCS thing, but in the end went with someone else. Mine (and the wife's -- we have an interlocking pair !!!! )took just over 5 weeks from phone call to acceptance, however I believe the norm to be more like 8 weeks.0

Thanks Monkeysox. glad I could help a bit. Once an IVA is arranged - maybe 3 or 4 weeks? And, during that time, you don't have to take calls from your creditors! DO be realistic about your ability to meet your monthly IVA payments, however. There's trouble in store if you miss even one. But, as long as you are sensible, you should be OK.
Jasper-dog's blog, which has been running since 2006, mentions what happened on our IVA visit: http://jasper-thedogsblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/saturday-28-july-2007.html.
An IVA isn't right for everyone. But, for me, it was the best thing I ever did (apart from adopting Jasper)! xx

Yes, I'm loving my three-year pay-freeze. Over the last year I've gone from having @ £150 to live on per month to @ £80 per month, what with rising fuel costs, inflation, rent and VAT rises, etc., but I can't really reduce my IVA repayments again. Sometimes, I just can't help laughing myself to sleep at night, I really can't...
Still, valuable lessons learned - I won't ever be dallying with loans and credit cards I cannot really afford again. Glad I got wise to this while I'm still young, free and single! :cool:0
