  • Hello Im a newbie just purchased The Money Diet (Excellent) I was 50 on the 30th March and its costing me 40 pounds a month to cover the silver roots! Read the students board very useful as I have a daughter at Leeds uni at the moment. I think they need a Money Diet book specifically for them. They are all stressing (at least my daughters friends were) because they are all overdrawn, starving (licking the left overs from my plate-I kid you not) and begging slices of bread (bless) My mum sent a box of biscuits and they disappeared within minutes. I think they should start teaching finance from the age of five Ive been on the planet for 50 years and Im confused :P

:DCome on folks, being a "silver 50" isn't all bad. I am nearly 59 but have been getting into the golf Open as a pensioner for the last two years. Saving £20 per day. Said I hadn't brought my pension book etc bu the kind ticket man said they had been told, "If you say you are a pensioner" they could not argue. Got a similar discount to see Princess Di's exhibition in Lodon last year.
We can also "legitimately" get discount cards for many of the hotel/ lodge chains, and the Toby restaurants. Just pick up a leaflet next time you are in one, or I do have some addresses if anyone is interested?

I am about to retire in two weeks time on twopence halfpenny a week! Thank to the generousity of the government and two disasterous marriages, I am looking forward to the freedom to enjoy my hobbies, golf, sea surfing, walking etc, any money saving ideas gratefully received. I am a big fan of Martin have driven my friends mad telling them all to join, have even converted my daughter she had Martins book in stead of an Easter egg this year. Thanks Martin.

Benefits of Retirement (apart from all that extra free time)?

Off the top of my head:

    Free prescriptions
    £200 winter fuel allowance
Concessionary travel on train, coach and local transport
Reduced admission to cinema, theatre and many sporting events
10% reduction at B&Q on Wednesday
25% off main meal at Beefeater
Reduced admission to recreatioal facilities (in Salford I get 12 months unlimited admission to all swimming pools for £21)

Hope this gives you a start

PS You don't have to be retired for many of these benefits - just over 60

Re car insurance. Try Age Concern or HelpThe Aged. I found both better than Saga

    Hi Gill

The best-paying savings a/c was ING Direct. Very simple, very straightforward, 4.7% interest. But it has now been overtaken by Alliance & Leicester's Plus Saver.

Your mum and dad can look at all these online, and can apply, manage their a/cs, do everything very simply online.
