Most banks don't do direct upgrades it's common pratice..RBS/Natwest, Halifax, Barclays don't do direct upgrades.

Abbey Lloyds and HSBC are the only banks which do direct upgrades.

    Have you tried HSBC?

By the looks of it, the customer needs to close down the old account, and keep the new/upgraded one the, if they don't want two bank accounts.

    It's unclear who you're asking there -

If it's me, I haven't as I had an account with them when I was younger and wasn't really bothered about how I used it and as such had a poor in-house score with them. As I understand it, they don't offer a basic account with a debit card. I haven't fully researched that recently though as they all seem to be in the process of offering debit cards on basic bank accounts.

I just can't put up with the hassle of having to use cash for everything, especially as I travel fairly regularly and can't face having an electron. I had one when Halifax first started doing them around 06-07 on their basic accounts, which was really useful at the time and was a step up form a cash card. I then switched to Lloyds as soon as they started the full visa. Barclays seem to offer the best facilities now that they do online banking plus a full visa which can be used in any machine.

I just hope I get it.

Got a couple of defaults recently but never been bankrupt and have loads of ID/Bills etc.

I think you will be accepted. Obviously, if you have a record of fraud, they will decline you.

Looks like Barclays basic bank account is the last resort, as other basic bank accounts offer Solo or Maestro debit cards, which are not widely accepted as VISA when travelling abroad. I hope you get accepted by Barclays.

This account is not credit scored.
  • I'll let you know. Probably be a week or two though. Thanks for the advice and support.

    You're welcome.

It takes at least 5 working days for the account to be processed and opened.
  • Just got the application form for the Barclays cash card account, and the fee for bouncing a D/D or S/O is £8!?!?!? And that's maximum per day, not per item......

It's the lowest for daily charges on the market. Main reason being is this account is aimed at people on low incomes and £8 per days is better than £40 per item that is what Natwest now charges on the step account.

I'm sure you won't get those charges if you have a good amount of money to cover for the DD's and SO's.

Remember you can apply in branch or post. If the staff said by post, just say nicely that you want to open it in branch. Opening it in branch is quicker, and in case there are problems, it could be sorted straight away, instead of later on.

All the best. Tell us how you get on.

That's exactly like my current account plus card with Yorkshire bank. Must issue the same cards on Readycash as well.
