Basic Bank Account Thread

Hello all!
I have a basic account with Nationwide as I had to shut down my previous account when I started my DMP with CCCS. My question is that I would dearly love a debit card (with Nationwide) 1) for the convenience that a debit card brings 2) I plan to go travelling and have heard Nationwide often recommended as the best to use abroad. My question, if anyone knows is how lkely is it that they will upgrade my basic cash card to a debit card in say 6 months? My wages and quite alot of my husbands wages get paid into this account? I am worried about this as I have read on a thread somewhere that some have had trouble getting upgraded with Nationwide. Anyone with any experience or ideas to get around this??
Cheers all

Yes Either The Co-op Bank or Barclays. The Co-op will give you a Visa Electron Debit card too!You need to apply for "The Cashminder Account", Either in Branch or by telephone.

When you apply on line to citibank for the basic account which gives you a £500 overdraft do they tell you there and then wether you will be accepted. Most lenders do !....
Said they would send some forms out and if I wanted to take advantage of £500 O/D would have to send last wage slip...anyone else have a similar experience..????

I am so cross, i went in to open the basic bank account, told them i have not great credit, the plonker then procceded to try for a current, when i told him thats not what i wanted, he told me that is the process.
Well went through application and and was declined and then he declined me for a basic account.
When i said that in the form even people with bad credit will get this account why cant i.
He said that was not the case and sorry they can not help.
I was so cross and now unnessesary got another black refusal on my credit file.
This really should not be allowed as im trying to get better credit but having refusals on my file do not help.
Any advice where i can take this matter further or how to get round it next time.

Well this is a problem I would think with many banks and their staff. Some are more knowledgeable than others on certain accounts etc. You have to know how banks and the like work to make things easier for you.
BEFORE applying for any account make a note of the following:
1. Call your the local bank branch or the head office of your choice, for some details on the account you wish to open, make sure you ask what credit reference agency they use. i.e. Experian, most use them. I know you are thinking this account i want is not credit scored. BUT they use some info from your credit file to tally with the info you provide, if it does not add up you may be declined. It may have nothing to do with some bad debt you have.
2. Now get your credit report from the agency they state. Cost is £2 and you are entitled to check your report, you will need proof of who you are as this info is protected under the Data Protection Act.
3. Banks all work certain ways. e.g. Halifax Easycash Basic Account is only available by post (Application packs available in branch or they can post to you, plus your local branch can verify your Passport and Driving Licence copies before you send them to be processed). Alliance & Leicester is a bank that deals with their Basic Cash Account in branch. Ask what they need to help with your application.
4. Make sure you are on the electoral register, this helps no end. You may be declined because of this fact alone.
5. If you are declined, try writing to them to ask why they have declined your application. As this might shed light on something you maybe overlooked.
6. Try looking at https://www.annualcreditreport.co.uk it is a FREE credit report service and no card details required. You can check your credit report once a year for FREE. This will give you an idea of any bad marks against your name.
Hope this info helps ease your anger.0 -
Sensible advice, well-written.
I don't have big debts, but don't seek credit either and have little income.
Nonetheless, any a/c with Electron Visa was necessary for ferry bookings, Amazon selling and one or two other things.
Have just received card for the Halifax one(advice from posters on this thread)as there are several Branches within 10 miles, various directions.
I did go on the Electoral Register, as per benpaul's reason 4, through gritted teeth. May now seek to remove name again(for good reason).CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:

Hi
Regarding my earlier post, is there a difference between credit score and credit check?
As for a basic account it was a credit score well mr Lloydstsb man decided to do a full credit check which i didnt want and told them i would not pass.
So with him doing this full credit check with it coming back no, will this also now go on my credit report?
I still think it is unfair that when you see any bank they dont listern and decide to just go ahead.
Thank you for any information0 -
I don't know if this is the correct place to post this or not, but here goes! I currently have a business account with Natwest for my string quartet - well actually they call it a club & society account. Up until now it's always been free to use, but it doesn't pay any interest, which is fine for our purposes.
I just got a letter through the post saying that there will now be a monthly fee for using the account. It doesn't say how much the fee will be. After being put through to about 5 different call-centre departments, Natwest are unable to tell me what the fee is. Out of principle I don't want to pay money to use an account.
Therefore, does anyone know if there is a bank that has a similar type of account that is free to use please? Thanks0
