    HI

While trawling the net to look for bank accounts etc, i came across companies that guarantee personal bank accounts with cards.

    Has anyone ever used them?

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this or not, but here goes! I currently have a business account with Natwest for my string quartet - well actually they call it a club & society account. Up until now it's always been free to use, but it doesn't pay any interest, which is fine for our purposes.

I just got a letter through the post saying that there will now be a monthly fee for using the account. It doesn't say how much the fee will be. After being put through to about 5 different call-centre departments, Natwest are unable to tell me what the fee is. Out of principle I don't want to pay money to use an account.

Therefore, does anyone know if there is a bank that has a similar type of account that is free to use please? Thanks

I entirely agree with your 'on principle' point, neilsolaris,
Would you consider the free Easycash a/c I've just opened with Halifax?(for different reason, as detailed in earlier posts)
I'd certainly enquire whether or not they could cater for your circs - there's probably further info. online anyway.
I chose one that has Branches in my nearest towns(nothing in this village)
It can still be seen online.

Thanks for your suggestion Ampersand, I'll definitely look into the Halifax account.

In the meantime, I'm still not absolutely sure if I'm going to be charged for my Natwest account yet. I eventually got through to my home branch, the guy I spoke to checked with the manager, who said there wasn't going to be any fee on my account - this is a complete contradiction to my letter. Do you think I should get this in writing, or is it safe to presume that what he told me over the phone is correct? I'm just worried that if I do incur a fee the account might go overdrawn, and things could get quite messy!

Hi, wonder if anyone can answer this question for me. I applied for a Halifax Easycash account online, few days later got an email for internet banking and a password in the phone. I set up the internet banking but it didn't have an account displayed. When I logged on just now, I could see an account with account no etc. Does that mean I have an account with them? I got stung before with Nationwide, applied for their basic account, got sent a cashcard etc and then got a letter a few days later to say that the are withdrawing my account! Is that likely to happen again with the Halifax? Hope someone can answer my question. Thanks!

You do have an account but it might not be opened yet. As long as they have seen and approved your ID then the account will be opened and the card issued. Sometimes the card does not get generated until you pay in some money, even the staff dont seem to know why this is.

    Hope this helps

Thanks James, not had a letter yet to send in ID so will just have to wait until that comes and hopefully I am set! Hope they don't close this one down as they did with Nationwide. I did read about depositing some money before I could use the card so will do that!

Ah, the same thing happened to me then out of the blue six months later the letter requesting ID appeared. I called up, they apologied and said it had happened to many people and was a system error. So if it has been more than a few weeks I would give them a call. Either that or just take your sort-code and account number that you can see on-line into any branch with a passport or photocard driving license.
