  • Hello,

I currently have a joint account only with my husband, but despite a good salary, I was turned down by my bank (Santander) for a separate account. It would appear that my husband failed to tell me about the court summons letters that arrived for both of us last year over a bill that we didn't owe, but he still hasn't bothered sorting out. He controls all of our money, despite not earning any, and I am desperate to get my own account so that I can take control of my money. I don't even have access to our internet banking.

It is even more imperative now that I have been offered, and have accepted a job in Indonesia. I can't be at the other side of the world with no control over my finances.

I have looked into the basic bank accounts, which all look fine, except I am concerned that I will not be able to use the card when I move away (which is of course vital).

Does anybody have any advice/suggestions? I have had no control over my money for so long that I haven't a clue where to turn.

I would be really grateful if anyone could help.

    Thank you x
  • Sorry, my post should have stated 'On Trains' rather than Train Stations.. Most Train Stations should be fine with the Nationwide CashCard+.
    David :)
£1 of debt is too much for me!
  • CashCard+ from Nationwide is a Visa Debit Card (Full-Auth) that can be used in the UK and & Abroad for purchases but can't be used at ATM's abroad.

The card can't be used where a connection is required to authorise the transaction such at Pay @ Pumps, Train Stations & on Airplanes.

A connection isn't required at Pay @ Pumps, Trains, Stations and Planes.... Which is why a lot of basic cards have problems. As these places do not have a connection to check if the person has the funds available at time of purchase. The transactions are carried out in batch every day or so.

    Just so you know....
I have been using the Cash Card+ since August 2010, and have since lost count of the amount of times I have used it at Pay @ Pump Machines in Petrol Stations. Also, in Train Stations and on Trains, as I used it on Virgin Trains shop regularly on a commute. Oh, as well as online shopping every week from Tesco and Sainsburys. Oh I used it on a Jet2 Plane a number of times as well.

So what you said is wrong.:T

I have a Barclays Cash Account which I have ran well sinceopening it a year ago. I got a letter towards the end of last year to say thatthey can now upgrade your account to a normal Barclays Bank account afterMarch.

I am wondering if they will upgrade people based on the waythey have run their cash account, or will they still credit search you beforeupgrading ?.

Thanks DannyDebt cause that's exactly what I want to do with mine.

Did they you you'll have a full card with the new bank account? What I mean is, a card that be used offline? Cause if not, then what would be the advantage of having a normal current account?

    thnx

Was this a letter that said your account specifically was getting upgraded, or was this the letter regarding a change in terms and conditions for all Cash Card account holders?

Advantages of having a normal account would include being able to have a chequebook and the ability for overdrafts and loans to be per-approved. Not sure if everyone would consider that an advantage :rotfl: Also, subject to other criteria being met, you have access to more account services, ie the instant access feature when you pay a cheque in, or being able to do an international payment over the phone.

It was for cash account customers in general my brother had a letter about it before Christmas it also mentioned about cash customers on getting statements every 3 months too.

"The conditions of the Cash Card account are changing so that they can upgrade customers to another current account, if they meet certain eligibility criteria, and they consider that switching you is not likely to increase your costs (based on assessment of your previous account history), they will write to you at least. two months notice before making the changes".

    Stclair & iblamemyparents,

Can we request that upgrade or is it always automatic? Since one of you is working for Barclays, is it always after 1 year, cause it seems all the people who have had their account upgraded had the account for just over a year?

    thnx
