Why? There are other basic accounts available for people with poor history and I do not believe I should be restricted in withdrawing my cash because of a bad history, I'm after basic banking facilities, not a credit or overdraft account.

As far as I can tell, something like 75 to 80% of machines are 'link', and when these changes kick in I wont be able to use those; only natwest/RBS ones.

Yes there are other Basic accounts available.

I was just checking if you were aware that you can still use the NatWest/RBS debit card in places like Tesco, but if you definately need to have access to Link machines then fair enough.

Will an application for a Basic Account impact on a Credit Record ?

I have no idea of basic accounts require a credit record search - that is a question I'm trying to find the answer to myself. If they do then that is a worry as I've had a few credit searches recently and another one would surely have a furthre negative impact.
  • Does anyone have any experience with Secure Trust as we are probably going to set up a basic bank account with them?

I've never got past the fact they charge a monthly fee for something you can do yourself with a pen and paper.

Yes that really does grate on me but we seem a bit stuck because we can't go with Barclays, Coop or NatWest and RBS (I know they own NatWest) are messing us about! Need a new account to start a DMP but can't find anyone to go with.

Feeling really fed up as don't understand WHY you have to jump through hoops to get a basic bank account.

Try Lloyds Banking group, Nationwide or HSBC, heck I'd even consider Santander before paying that much for an account, (though I'm not sure I'd ever stoop that low). There's a list of basic bank accounts here

We are trying to open a Joint basic account but it seems all the best ones need to be opened in branch.
Does anyone know if we would both have to go in to do this or could I just go on my own if I took all the necessary ID as my OH works away from home alot.

    Thanks peeps

It's better that both of you go into branch.

RBS Group and HBOS basic bank accounts can be opened online, and ID is checked electronically.
  • Hello I am looking to open up a joint basic bank account as we are sorting out all our debts and have an overdraft with santander (we deal with our creditors ourselves so not in a DMP)
A couple of things we have no ID between us I can possibly get bank statements my DH just a joint bank statement that he has no card for any help to witch one to apply

Also can I have a savings/other account to put money in for clothes emergencies etc linked to that account.

providing you are on the electoral register, you can apply for some accounts online which might overcome the ID problem
