Basic Bank Account Thread

  • I cannot see how it would affect credit scoring in anyway since there is no credit involved if it is truly a basic bank account. In practice what I think may happen in some banks, the application form will ask do you have a basic bank account, and if you tick yes that bank may decide it doesn't want to offer you one.

The consensus in this thread seems to be there is nothing to force any particular bank to offer you an account just as a pub doesn't have to serve anyone etc.

  • If I have a bill payment due to go out on the same day as the credit coming in to cover it, is there a possibility that I will be temporarily in the red or will my account be balanced at the end of the day?

Depends.. If the credit is a direct debit from another account already set up it will cover the bill payment. If a cheque might not, depending on clearing times. Cash clears immediately paid in. Have tested all three recently!

Some banks require you to have the funds in place at the end of the previous day's business. I think you're best checking with your own bank to avoid possible charges and returned items.
  • Please i would need as much advice as i can get from the good people on this forum.
my nightmare started when i applied to have another current account with lloyds.
the account was closed 2 days after it was opened in branch,to add to my problem, the only hsbc account i have left was closed days after aswell due to a CIFAS MARKING on my file.
please my question now is which bank account can i open even if its basic account.
i need to have a bank account in my name for my day to day activities plus to get my wage paid into it.
can i apply to open a citibank account?
please advice if i can APPLY TO OPEN A citi bank account with a CIFAS MARK on my name AND IF I WOULD BE ACCEPTED OR NOT.CHEERS
  • Whats the CIFAS marking for ?
  • i think the lady that filled my application must have gotten something wrong. still waiting on a response from cifas itself to expalin what exactly is going on.
but to be honest i still dont know why all these is happening to me right now cos on the letter hsbc sent to me, they adviced i contact CIFAS and from reading from other post on here concluded i must have CIFAS marking on my name is why all these
  • I have finally realised that my relationship with NATWEST is over. It became a one-sided relationship. NATWEST doing all the taking and I was doing all the giving - what a selfish partner;)

I need to set up Basic Bank account asap. I need one with direct debits and standing orders and not a cousin, second cousin or step-brother of NATWEST :o

I have looked at CITIBANK - as recommended on some much earleir threads. I haven't any CCJs but I am in arrears on practically everything (apart from mortgage, utilities etc) - would CITIBANK touch me??

Otherwise is COOP Basic ok? or Halifax?

Can I put in 2 applications at same time or will this look bad? I dont want to waste a month waiting for one bank to say NO - I cant face the rejection :( - Any advice welcome. This is a great forum I have really started to get my head out of the sand and taking control because of reading all the advice on this site. RON

The earlier posts on citibank are now quite old and do not seem to refer to their current requirements. Do not assume they are easy to get an account with now.

I would opt for the Barclays Cash Card Account
