Agreed - if you've been offered the Classic, take it. Although the differences aren't great these days - if you can get a full service account even better.
  • I had applied for the step account, so was quite shocked.

I am now in the unusal position of being offered two accounts!! Had a welcome pack from LTSB this morning for their classic account, and had stuff through from nationwide for their cashcard+ account!!

Think i'm going to go for LTSB after reading about peoples problems using the cashcard+ card. I like to pay at pump and take money out while im on holiday.

if i understand correctly the classic is a 'normal' current account and not basic, so gor for LTSB, well done :T
She LEFT me, she LIED, and she made me foot the BILL !

This isn't true. The basic barclays card cash account has a visa debit card, direct debits and full internet banking. There is no overdraft or direct debit with any basic bank account to my knowledge. You'd be best talking to a different staff member.

Thats incorrect... I have a natwest step account, with my mobile phone contract coming out via DD every month

    Certainly no OD though!

Thanks for spotting my error, I meant no chequebook or overdraft! A silly mistake as I have 8 or 9 direct debits on my basic bank account!

Is the Easycash (Halifax / Bank of Scotland) the only basic account which doesn't report on a monthly basis?

Popped into Nationwide for a CashCard a/c application pack. The leaflet states that you do not get a Visa debit card. I thought you did? The date on the leaflet was July 2010

The Cash Card + has many similar features to a Visa Debit card, but also some differences (e.g. no foreign ATM withdrawals). By stating that you do not get a Visa Debit card, Nationwide are being clear that the Cash Card + you do get lacks some of the features that their full Visa Debit card offers.

If the leaflet you have doesn't already explain what you can and can't do with the Cash Card +, this link includes this information.

You do get a Visa debit card with that account. Just apply for it. :)

Other people on here have one, and posted a picture of it.

Very interesting and worthwile thread this. Inevitably I do have a couple of questions :o

I have recently applied for an been accepted for a basic bank account with Natwest. The setup process was first rate, they seem to be one of the few banks that would let you apply for it online. The card and pin came through and I have setup online banking.

I do have one or two reservations though. Firstly I went into the branch today to 'try it out' and the queue was massive, so much for thier customer charter. Now I know it was the day after bank holiday but there was only ONE machine at which you could deposit and it was out of service. Underwhelmed there. Truth be told I only applied for this to try it out as I am planning to go B/R next year.

Will the fact that I have a basic account with one bank cause others to knock me back?

Why is it that few allow you to apply online? If it branch or telephone based to allow for the interrogation other have mentioned? I suppose I should just tell the truth and say I'm going B/R I want to have this setup before I do so.

I doubt I can stay with Natwest as, apart from the experieince today I feel dirty all over because of the way they treated a relative. Even though its just in my head I don't want them to have my meagre funds. Its sorta bothered me more as the days have passed!

I'm thinking of the Co-Op as they often come top for service.
