It happened to me and I was declined. No reason given. I had initially applied via post and heard nothing back so went into branch.
I know we are going to be declined too, but I wonder why when most others seem to be able to open accounts with them?DMP Mutual Support Thread No 278

Then at the end she said the decision had been referred, she said it should not be a problem as it happens quite a lot. I dont think I believe her though, I think she knew we were turned down and didnt want to say.:( She was acting quite evasive and said she would ring me in the morning but I am not being very hopeful of a good result, as I normally think if you have been accepted they tell you there and then.
Has this referred thing happend to anyone else and they were then accepted?
We were in the same position as you, co-op gave us notice just before christmas, luckily we had a smartsaver account to get our wages etc paid into, but no dd facility or debit card. We have tried numerous banks, and been declined and the same thing happened to us as you when we went to Barclays. the advisor was very positive, tried to sell us loads of other products then we were referred; he then said he thought it would be a yes and would phone later that day. it took 2 days for him to phone to say we were declined and all he could say was look at your credit file, which we did and there is nothing except a 5yr old default for natwest and one account which had 3 late payments in the last year but was showing as satisfactory now!
we have now opened a managed account with secure trust bank, although its 12.50 to open and the same monthly, it means we can have dds etc and have a mastercard with it, the money it costs will be recouped from not paying extra for not paying by dd! and there is no chance of being overdrawn no fees for missed dd or anything! theres even internet and telephone banking. we are going to keep this for at least 6 months then try a mainstream bank again
GOOD LUCK; it is truly awful being in this position and i can sympathise with you0 -
I have a friend who is considering taking up matched betting. For this she will need a current account that she can manage online but will she have problems opening one? She only has her passport for id and nothing else to her name(her partner pays the bills and she wants to keep it secret from him)0

Open an account with Barclays. They only need one piece of ID, and a passport is fine. Not many banks will accept one piece of ID when opening bank accounts.0 -

Clydesdale and Yorkshire bank Readycash are the only 2 left issueing Maestro in the UK.
Northern Bank if you are in Northern Ireland also do them.0 -

Why do you want a Maestro card instead of a Visa one?
Open/switch to another bank that has a Visa card with their accounts. All of the Visa cards work overseas.0 -

No they don't actually. I've been caught twice in China and last year in Hungary where Visa cards were not working and I had been told to use Maestro. luckily Natwest has maestro function on their cards but now they have move to Visa too I am a bit stuffed..total debt at lightbulb 18th April 2007:idea: £42367.60:eek: DFW Nerd No 725. Can anyone help. I live in Spain, having lived here for 4 years. I have a Nationwide Flexaccount which has been perfect for my needs, it the only account I have in England. I only have a cash card as I withdraw cash from the machines to pay into my spanish account. Now Nationwide are withdrawing their cashcards and re-issuing a new card called Cashcard +, but with these cards will not allow users to withdraw cash from any cashmachines outside the UK, although they can be used to buy items from shops. I have tried to upgrade my account with Nationwide in order to obtain a debit card to allow me to withdraw cash but I have been refused. I assume this is because I am not on any electoral roll, and the address I use for the bank is my parents address. As from 1 June I am going to be stuck, not being able to withdraw my cash. Does anyone know of any bank which is likely to let me open an account with them even though I live in Spain.
Please help. Thank you0 -
Could you not open an account in Spain with someone like Santander? You could also try Citibank. They have sterling and euro accounts. When I had their sterling current account I was given a Visa debit card and was not charged for withdrawing cash in Gran Canaria.0
