    Hi
We have a basic bank account with co-op, and when I went on tonight to check something I discovered they have cancelled our D/D's. When I rang they are closing our acc due to the 3 strikes and out. We have had a few prob's with DD's but over a mix up with dates and one for 10p over. Anyhow we are now going to have to try and sort out a new acc in the morning. Will anyone else take us on after this? Who else could we try? Any recommendations.

You should still be able to get the following accounts:

    Halifax Easycash

    Barclays Cash Card Account

Neither of these accounts require a credit check.

The Halifax one is good as if it's well managed you may be able to open a full account with them (their full account is one of the best if you do not use an overdraft).

If you read the 'Barnkruptcy & Living With It' sub-forum, you will see that people managed to open the Barclays basic account, even though they owe money to the bank.

I think you will have no problem opening one.

Although it should be possible to successfully get their basic account, it is possibly not advisable (depending on your own situation).

Just remember that if you owe money to them on one account (e.g. your credit card) and have a credit balance on another account, then they can pay off one with the other, without specifically informing you.

In practice, this would mean that they could take all the money in your current account, and use it to pay off all or part of the credit card, leaving you with no money.

It's probably best to get a basic account elsewhere, and pay off the credit card at your pace (but still asap!).

Help, which is the best bank account for a 16 year old leaving school this year and going to college????

Take a look at the websites of some of the banks ...

Halifax is good, gives you a debit card, and their online banking is one of the best. Also pays 1.51% interest which is pretty good.

Lloyds TSB, also good, with 2.5% interest.

You could also look at HSBC and Barclays, but neither of these are as good as the Halifax or Lloyds ones. Personally I would avoid Natwest and Santander for a current account, as customer service here tends not to be as good as the other banks that I have mentioned.

Yes, you will be able to open the cashcard account even if they ar a creditor, they where my biggest creditor in my I.V.A and I opened one this morning, they gave me my account number and sort code at the same time and they advised my card would be with me within a week. Just a friendly warning though, Barclays and the co-op cashminder are the only two accounts that do not credit check you so if the co-op have closed your account with them, then Barclays is your last option as ALL the other banks do :)

You need to open the co-op cashminder account or the Barclays cash card account, you can open either one of these even if Barclays is one of your debtors. I would recomend the co-op cashminder one though as it give you internet banking, Barclays won't let you have that until you have cleared your debt but they will let you open one as they where my bigest debtor's in my I.V.A and I opened an account today. Anyway the co-op telephone number is 08456027057 they will set up your account over the phone and you will need to send them 2 forms of verified id, one photo id, eg a photo driving licence or passport and a utility bill, I used a bank statement. Get these photocopied and verified to say they are from original doccuments and it is a good likeness of you, then send them off to the address they will give you when you ring them. Or if you have a branch near you it is easier to take the original forms of id into them and as to open a casminder account but if you do it over the phone you will receive your card and internet banking details within a week of them receiveing you proof of id.

I hope this has helped as I felt the same as you when I first went into my iva, none of the banks seem to want to help you but I assure you these two will, they are both great :)

Went to open my barclaycard account today and the girl was very positive and told us we would get the account details there and then. Then at the end she said the decision had been referred, she said it should not be a problem as it happens quite a lot. I dont think I believe her though, I think she knew we were turned down and didnt want to say.:( She was acting quite evasive and said she would ring me in the morning but I am not being very hopeful of a good result, as I normally think if you have been accepted they tell you there and then.

Has this referred thing happend to anyone else and they were then accepted?

It happened to me and I was declined. No reason given. I had initially applied via post and heard nothing back so went into branch.
