Try quark low fat mashed up with a banana topped with a sprinkle of light brown sugar. Quark is like a soft cheese that doesnt have much taste but when mashed with banana is very nice

I wonder if you could freeze this to make a banana 'ice-cream'? Might have to have a go at that :) Another good thing to do if you're craving ice cream is to cut a banana in half and sitck a lolly stick in it. Put it in the freezer and when it's frozen, it's just like ice cream!

Would something like meringues be acceptable? You could top them with low-fat fromage frais and some fruit - raspberries are good.
  • Back in October I had a scare when it was discovered that I had really
(215/120) high blood pressure. My doctor took one look at me - I am cuddly - and prescribed statins to lower my cholesterol without listening to me. My blood was tested the next day and discovered that I had v.low cholesterol 3.8, apparently my glucose levels are low too. I tried telling them that it was because I am a vegan - have been for 3 years. They eventually agreed that I had one of the healthiest diets. I certainly don't starve but neither do I eat any animal fats. Try and get hold of The Cake Scoffer - it has loads of cake/pudding recipes with no animal products. Don't have mine here right now but when I get it back in a couple of weeks I will pm you some recipes if you like.

    Hi
I was wondering if anyone could offer some sample menus/menu planing advice to help me lower my cholesterol level, to make it slightly more complicated the menu would ideally need to be balanced to allow it to feed me, my wife who is breast feeding, my 2year old daughter and my 6mth old son who is now weaning (eating pretty much most foods)
    thanks
    Jim

i would think healthy eating would be the way to go and low fat, though saying that i took mine down by walking four miles twice a week, diet not changed, you need to walk that far to burn the fat from your blood, in the old days people had loads more exercise and were the healthier for it, though high cholesterol can be hereditary

Googling cholestrol reducing menu plan etc will probably bring up ideas, will be some 'wonder drugs' and expensive joining sites but easy enough to avoid. When cooking for a variety of needs the main things I would say to change are portion sizes of things (so for example on your plate more veg than meats and carbs etc) so you can cook the 'same' meal for everyone without eating the same, changing your plate size might help, I found this did when wanting to loose weight and like twink said exercise is a big factor.

If your GPs can offer it most have a dietician who can offer advice if you have very high cholestrol levels. I'm lucky, maybe over weight but my cholestrols low :)
One day I might be more organised...........

Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb

I've just discovered that I have high bad cholesterol and low good cholesterol.

I thought that I had a good diet, low in fat and high in good things, but somewhere something is going wrong.

I asked the doc if the Gloria Hunniford stuff would help and she said it is only any good if you do the other things as well!

So, I need to lower the one and raise the other and I need some help. Does anyone know how I get the good one up. They said seeds and oily fish - how, when, how much and is there anything else that will do it?

I think there must be lots of people out there who have the same problem it would be nice to share ideas and advice. Also, the cure sounds expensive and is there any way to do it old style?

I was told to eat oily fish at least twice a week, and to take the Benecol drinks daily. They are expensive though! Need to make an appointment for my next blood test - if the results have improved I'll carry on, if not I'll be ditching the drinks!

This is the information sheet that my doctor gave me.
I have been diagnosed with familial cholesterol which means that I will take statins from now on as my liver produces too much cholesterol, not related too much with my diet.

    http://www.bhsoc.org/pdfs/Healthy_Eating_Diet_Sheet.pdf

    Hope it helps.
Basically eat fruit and vegetables and whole cereals.
Since starting the medications I have lost some weight and energy levels have improved.
I have M.E. so experience chronic fatigue and delayed pain so find exercise difficult. However the "diet" has been a great help and has helped.
    Good luck
