My OH was diagnosed with high cholestrol (8.9) a year ago and he is now told hes on 4.4 :j

Weve been doing this on a budget of 100pcm Ive got the chart in front of me, so I know which one you will have been given

Personally I panicked a bit- but then relaxed and it all became normal. there are many meals that are cheap and fall into the fine category. We dont restrict ourselves to NEVER having certain things. Neither of us can live with the deprivatin

In all honesty there is very little differnece in our diet now, except is more OS. No more the packets of biscuits or kiplings cakes :j he cant have them but he can have home baked ;)

the other benefit is that he has not eaten a doner kebab in over 12 months :D heres hoping he wont restart :rotfl:

Ask me anything mrs A, been doing it on the cheap for a year now :D
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

We did the same as Lynzpower. OH and I were both diagnosed with high cholestoral and have brought it down to the normal range ... we would put it down to making everything from scratch - and the OS lifestyle which means we are less like couch potatoes and spend a lot of time in the kitchen :D

I do make my own butter and yoghurt and I do bake, but as lynzpower says, it has been a case of having things in moderation. We spend about £12 per week on fruit and veg and we have cut the portion size of our meat. We use a panasonic breadmaker to make wholemeal loaves and there are some good Irish Soda bread recipes on this site (OH makes bread, I make Irish Soda bread).

I still have a couple of pieces of good chocolate every night :D
Enjoying an MSE OS life :D
  • Fresh and tinned oily fish are often cheap and I believe good for cholesterol - eg, mackeral, sardines, pilchads, salmon. I had pancreatitus from gall stones a few years ago, and was told to eat low fat. I did and as a result when my cholesterol was tested a few months later it was about 4, which was a bonus!
Found that treat (but healthy) meals like griddled tuna or really lean steak with salad and low fat oven chips were often really lovely, and healthy too. They werent the cheapest but if you have something you really enjoy but is relatively health once in a while it helps you keep on track!
Also got into the habit of doing everything with fry-lite spray, a bottle lasts for ages and you can even make things like (relatively) low fat pancakes which are great (just use 1 egg with your flour, and skimmed milk!)
    Good luck

My partner has just been diagnosed with high cholesterol. Fortunately I’m pretty good at eliminating most saturated fat from his diet, increasing his oily fish intake etc but he’s started craving sweet things – particularly milk chocolate and ice cream:eek:  and so I’m trying to pull together some recipes for sweet things for him. :D

It’s particularly galling for him as it appears to be genetic – I was worried that I might be in the same boat but I have low cholesterol – lucky me!

Does anyone have any ideas? He’s done really well so far and I don’t want him to fall back again!:A

I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...

Is sugar a problem for high cholesterol?

If not what about sorbets? Frozen yoghurt made with low fat might also be good. Frozen fruit can also be nice (especially grapes) - the coldness seems to intensify the sweetness.

Also Irish Soda Bread is made with no fat (traditionally it's made with buttermilk, I've made it with soured skimmed milk too) and you can add in some sugar and raisins to make it sweet if he fancies baked sweet goods.

As for the chocolate alas there are many of us battling that demon, all I can suggest is telling him he's not alone!

Sadly not - :( but thank you anyway! :D Cholesterol is something that comes with mainly saturated fat. Essentialy it comes from animal fats, butter, cream, cheese, eggs and the worst of all fat in meat. Things with low cholesterol or can lower cholesterol because of their makeup are vegetable oils, olive oil, fish oils (the ol' Omega 3) and Bennecol products (if you're prepared to believe Carol Vordeman ever again)

I can use eggs sparingly, skimmed or semi skimmed milk, a little cheese and Stork or some other margarine which is low in saturated fat - and now doesn't have trans-fats and hydrogenated fats pretty much which could have done much worse than the saturated fat.

So I'm looking for desserts that are made with oil or marge, milk, as few eggs as possible. However I can push him into a diabetic coma with sugar (i.e. he can have as much as he likes) and he can stuff himself with bread. Anyone good with a restricted list of ingredients?

Excess Carbohydrates can be converted to bad cholesterol and even worse triglycerides which are far more serious when it comes to clogging arteries. Most of the problem seems to be that modern food is too refined and rather like rocket fuel to our bodies. The excess energy that we take in ends up being stored as fat even though we may not have a high fat intake.
I like to give people as many choices as possible to do what I want them to. (Milton H Erickson I think)
