my gp gave me a diet sheet for high cholesterol which said to avoid caviar!
;)
Every day above ground is a good one0 -
Has he been advised to lose weight at all? That was suggested to me by my GP.
Also, make sure he has plenty of soluble fibre - washed and unpeeled fruit such as apples and pears. Oats are good as are oranges and grapefruit. Wholemeal bread rather than white.
Keep to low fat dairy, preferably olive oil spread instead of other marges or butter. Grill rather than frying, but if you do use oil at all make it rapeseed oil.
You don't have to cut out treats like cake and biscuits altogether, but make them yourself, that way you can avoid all the bad fats like palm oil (sat fat) hydrogenated & partially hydrogenated fats (trans fat, worse than sat fat!)0 -

No, his weight is fine. His main problem has been animal based saturated fat. Neither of us eat unhealthily apart from desserts and even then it's not too bad. He's just one of those people who has a naturaly high cholesterol level. We've already managed to reduce it by a point (down from 7.1 to 6.1 - maximum should be 5) I would just like to make something a bit different from an apple crumble with stork instead of butter!
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -
Try quark low fat mashed up with a banana topped with a sprinkle of light brown sugar. Quark is like a soft cheese that doesnt have much taste but when mashed with banana is very niceWho would like my last penny?0

High Cholestorol can easily be sorted with regular exercise & a "slight" reduction in saturated fat intake, forget the fad diets, trust Benecol (it works to a degree) and get out walking or something. How do i know this? Being diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic with incredible cholestorol levels (8.9) and high blood pressure @ 170/110. 6 weeks of walking 3 miles a day brought down both the blood pressure (to 140/80) and the cholestorol levels to 4.6 points.553780080

Has your OH got any siblings Dronid, as they should be getting their cholesterol tested too if it's a genetic problem.
My cholesterol is till higher than ideal, but I have a good HDL/LDL ratio and my cardiac risks are fairly low for my age (peri-menopausal, but ex-smoker, not diabetic etc, no history of stroke/heart attack in immediate family)
I need more exercise (don't we all?), but like your OH I struggle with a sweet tooth.0 -
Yes he has a brother and sister both of whom are now getting checked out. Apparently there was a history of it in the family but no one ever talked about it! It's quite frustrating how little information filters through the family. I'm pretty well informed on most of this stuff and it always surprises me that others don't try and deal with issues and just pretend it never happens. After a few years going out with him all sorts of stuff bubbled to the surface, parents were on an interest only mortgage but hadn't realised that they were not paying off the mortgage. I've now got them to change to a repayment mortgage but they've wasted several years mortgage payments! They hadn't changed their gas, electric, telephone or TV options ever and finally I was able to go through their finances with the website which helped a lot. They're in a much better state financially but things like the cholesterol thing keep coming out of the woodwork.
It can be a little exhausting!
Thanks for all your feedback everyone!

My MIL couldn't eat dairy products so used to eat Swedish Glace, as she used to crave ice cream, just looked on the website and seen they even do a chocolate version!

We bought it in the healthfood shop in town as they stock a few different flavours, but we have seen it in Morrisons

I went to my GP two weeks ago and as he hasnt seen me for a few years he decided to give me "an MOT" everything came back fine including my cholestrol level but aparently I have high levels of Trigliceride which I confess I had never heard of. I now have to follow a diet the same as you would for lowering cholestrol ,so will watch this thread with great interest.
A footnote to say I am not overweight so never considered I would have a problem.Away with the fairies.... Back soon0 -
I am in the same boat trying to reduce my cholesterol and craving sweet things. Some things that have helped me...
Sliced bananas (very ripe so sweet) with evaporated milk poured over (not perfectly low cholesterol but better than a chocolate!)
Or sliced bananas with chocolate custard (made with skimmed milk with choc nesquick mixed in and thicked with cornflour and a little sugar)
Or sliced strawberries with yoghurt or evaporated milk.
Or baked apples and pear slices with cinammon and a little evaporated milk or yoghurt.0
