But the OP specifically had linked the credit card to the account so at some point agreed to have tops taken when required.

Normally it stops working when you've run out of credit and tells you to authorise a top up.

Well, it's a long time since I was on PAYG and I don't know what 'linking' means.
I can be wrong, but my understanding is that the main details of the CC are just stored in the system so that the customers don't need to enter them every time they top up the balance.

And how do you authorise actually? Would the daughter be able to 'authorise' occasionally or intentionally?

Here is what happened just been abroad Tenerife my darling daughter who is on a PAY AS YOU GO Orange Sim card, went on the internet and has racked up over £100s of costs this money has been taken straight from my credit card account without a pin number or security number. I did associated the card for top-ups but have always had to have given my 3 digit security number when phoning. I believed naively, that this was a suitable constraint apparently not when on the internet..
This is dangerous for parents that thought they had control on PAYG.
Can Orange just do that? Is there any course for redress??
Oh yes, I have disassociated the card from orange..

Have you perhaps also registered auto-top ups by mistake and thus the phone has just been doing automatic top ups?

Most likely Mum did set auto topups in the past...

Question is did the phone get the texts (ie they were recieved and daughter deleted them) or did they never arrive?

Looks like a very likely explanation indeed, especially if the same amount was debited several times, not a big one-off payment.

See my previous post, its possible to top up on the handset using the previously nominated card without using mobile internet or making a call.

In my opinion the OP needs to carefully check whether the payments were authorised before taking any further action.

I have not set up any auto toups

As grumbler says my understanding is also that the main details of the CC are just stored in the system so that the customers don't need to enter them every time they top up the balance.

So, was it just one big odd amount or several same round amounts taken from the card?

A little bit strange, but this fits into the hypothesis of automatic topups.
The provider receives the roaming data with some delay and automatically tops up the account depending on the negative balance by rounding the figure up to the nearest 5.

I think you definitely have to check the settings in your account.
