If it makes any difference, they said "3 digit security number" (i.e. CVV), not last 3 numbers.

I understood. Last 3 numbers in the string on the reverse of Debit/Credit cards.

In the menu of the phone there is a OrangePlus option (a SIM services menu for the technical) Under this is PayandGo\Top-up\Use Nominated Card . Then you need to enter your Orange code which was texted when the account was set up.

So it may be that the phone was topped up legitimately, certainly worth investigating before taking any action.

    PAYG is not a contract.
Can you post a link to the T&C that state this?

PAYG is a contract, albeit one without fixed length. You agree to terms and conditions when you sign up and use the service.

Here is what happened just been abroad Tenerife my darling daughter who is on a PAY AS YOU GO Orange Sim card, went on the internet and has racked up over £100s of costs

Internet is charged at £4 a megabyle on PAYG Orange in Tennerife. It would be easy to run up a big bill if using you tube or facbook watching videos.

You are missing the main point here.
On PAYG they are supposed not to let you using more than you top up in advance.

Even if it was the case, this would make no difference. However,
If you're a pay monthly customer, you'll need to check that your account is registered for roaming, to do this please call Orange customer services on 150. If you're a pay as you go customer, your phone is automatically set up for use abroad.

But the OP specifically had linked the credit card to the account so at some point agreed to have tops taken when required.
