I don't see what the fault is here. Have I missed something - the OP's connection is a bit slow as the average for an up to 20Mbps service is between about 4Mbps and 6Mbps, but this is a perfectly working connection.

Virgin Media is partly fibre optic. Sky just uses ADSL down phone lines, which is why it's so slow - line quality and/or length. To give another example the phone line here is only 3.6km long, but can't even do 2Mbps.

In this respect there is no "what you should be receiving" - it's just a guess based on similar lines, but all lines are unique.

Mark What you say above, Sky have not confirmed back to me in any shape or form other than what I should be getting based on their line tests.

When the openreach engineer came to replace my line, he confirmed I should also be getting a better connection as well.

I got a call from sky support yesterday afternoon who said they cranked up my line to 5.7Mb, I check my connection this morning and it's still 3Mb down and 256k up.

I think I'll be switching my entire sky tv, broadband and phone package to virgin this weekend.

Incidentally the openreach engineer did find a line fault between the pole in the street and my property, however no further improvement in the line speed.

How are you checking it? Via the stats from the router which should be connected straight to the test socket? (forgive me if that's been previously mentioned).

The line fault will have a massive effect on your speed. Even if Sky crank it up to 20Mb, the line fault will prevent you from getting that.

You will never get a stable line at 5.7mbps, with a downstream attenuation of 55db.
As above post your line stats.

Please listen to people on this thread.
You will not get 5.7Mbps on your line.
An attenuation of 55db means either your line is quite long, or is poor quality. Sadly, you cannot really change either of those things.
It is just a fact of using ADSL based services.

My broadband contract has already expired, however my contract for tv and phone line does not expire until 21st July which leave me in a quandary.

Am I able to cancel early on the basis of poor service as I would like to switch over sooner?

Your contracts will not be collective (hence the different end dates) and therefore your Sky services will need to complete their terms.

As per above you will have to pay off the contract with Sky to switch all - you want to switch based on the bundle discount - I would look at cashback and factor it in - call sky and reduce all your services with sky to the lowest possible...
  • OFCOM did introduce a Code of Practice for things like this. Which won't load at the moment as the OFCOM site is broken, but presumably will come back up at some point.

    http://www.ofcom.org.uk/telecoms/ioi/copbb/copbb/

    It's paraphrased and explained here
    http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk/speed/ofcom-code-of-practice-broadband-speeds.html

If Sky subcribes to the Code of Practice and the estimate you were given was significantly higher than the reality then perhaps you could use this to get out of the broadband contract, but, probably not, say, the phone line. But it would give you some more money towards a Virgin cable connection only (that being dearer than it otherwise would have been, had you gone for a bundle package)

OP. Sky may have move the upper limit of your broadband connection to 5.7 Mbps, however as pointed out many times you will never achieve that speed.
You have a 55db line, the maximum you'll ever get if it was perfect is around 4 Mbps.
