Sky router only connecting at 2.5MB

That sounds about right tbh. At a downstream attenuation of 55, you are either quite a way away from the exchange, or the line is very poor quality. Theoretically you could probably get more, but in reality 2.5Mbps isn't that bad for a line like that.
As penrhyn says, you could get a bit more speed out of it if sky were willing to lower the target SNR margin (not much, probably just pushing it up to 3Mbps), but there is the risk of instability and constant disconections which is why they probably won't be willing to.
In reality, 2.5Mbps really isn't that bad. Certainly enough to do most things you could want online (streaming iPlayer included).0 -
Yeah, at 55db you're looking at around 3Mb.0

Thanks for the info guys!0

Im with Sky too with similar stats i think you could eek out a bit more speed TBH.0

My broadband woes stilll go on. I called Sky today and let rip over my broadband speeds. They confirmed that I should be recieving 6 - 11mb connection and will send round a bt engineer tomorrow but willl charge me £150 if problem is inside house.0

Have you tried changing your filters? My speed went from 6.1Mbps to 7Mbps when I replaced my cheapo O2-supplied filters with these:

At best I expected a fractional improvement. The point of changing them was initially to get rid of the trailing filters, so I was very happy with the result. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Hogwash...First they have to raise a fault ticket on Wholesale or Eco depending on what broadband you're on (offnet or onnet)
Then it'll give them an option to book an BT appointment IF a fault is identified.
Sky also have the option in what was the Tier2 & Teir3 departments to log into the exchange using LAMA & other systems & adjust the line speed.Unless the troubleshooting was done & a fault ticket raised, this wont be done.
(I spent over 2 years working in the Tier2 & 3 before I left. That was the proceedure then & I cant think it's changed much.
(Sky Tier2 & 3,or whatever they are known as now,are based in Livingstone Scotland & Belfast)0 -
I don't see what the fault is here. Have I missed something - the OP's connection is a bit slow as the average for an up to 20Mbps service is between about 4Mbps and 6Mbps, but this is a perfectly working connection.
Virgin Media is partly fibre optic. Sky just uses ADSL down phone lines, which is why it's so slow - line quality and/or length. To give another example the phone line here is only 3.6km long, but can't even do 2Mbps.
In this respect there is no "what you should be receiving" - it's just a guess based on similar lines, but all lines are unique.0 -
I have seen a vast improvement in speed when Sky replaced a faulty Sky Sagem router with a Sky Netgear router.
They look the same physically from the outside. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!0 -
Hello,
I have had sky broadband unlimited for nearly a year and I recently started making noises about connection speeds as Sky have launched Anytime+, I have purchased an Xbox and my TV is capable of IPlayer. The package is up to 20MB which I fully understand by nature of the term “up to”.
I logged onto my sky router (Sagem) and check the connection speed, the router is only connecting at 2045Kbps downstream and 608Kbps upstream which is far different from the up to 20MB.
I signed into my “MySky” account the checked the broadband details and sky have estimated my line is capable of 4.5MB connection. I carried out the recommended check on their website, i.e filters, ensure the router is plugged in the master socket, compare stats between the test socket and actual socket which by the way was no different. I work in IT so not a noob to technology.
To my frustration I emailed sky as I refuse to pay the call charge for the help number. Following no responses back from sky after two I decided to call them.
The person I spoke to checked my line and said that it is only capable of speed up to 2.8MB only which is hard to believe as I have had 3.7MB before and I pointed out that my “MySky” account is stating speeds of 4.5 MB, she said that is was an estimate only. She said that if she increases my line speed any more it will be unstable.
I am basically left with an internet connection only capable of connecting at 2045Kbps which is appalling.
The only option I have is to move over to Virgin media for Broadband, which to make it economical is to move my entire package, phone, tv and broadband over severing all ties with Sky. My broadband contract has already expired, however my contract for tv and phone line does not expire until 21st July which leave me in a quandary.
Am I able to cancel early on the basis of poor service as I would like to switch over sooner?
I’d rather avoid moving away from sky but given no choice, any ideas or suggestions in improving my broadband speed?
I don’t quite trust the judgement of the helpdesk person I spoke to as she didn’t seem that willing to assist.
Thanks
A not very happy Vinny L
