Also ran HiJack - but each time its done it, it doesnt show me something I can cut and paste here. When I select "analyse this" as directed it sends me to a webpage giving me instructions relating to posting the info on forums.
When you run Hijackthis, select 'do a system scan and save a logfile' - it should run quickly, and after a few seconds will open the log in Notepad, which you can copy/paste. Otherwise the logfile should be called hijackthis.log and created in the folder where the program was run from.

BTW, the Malwarebytes log was clean.

I have had a look at the website you mentioned, and it seems to be looking for a quicktime plugin rather than flash.
  • OMG Quicktime, I thought that went out with the Ark .... :(

You could try running screaming out of the front door of your house with your hands on your head Barbara Stanwyck style!

Don't worry if you're actually male it's quite acceptable for a man to show his feelings these days. :D

Won't actually fix anything, but you'll feel a whole lot better! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xe2OaOrvmOU

Click save log, then you can copy/paste from the log. Don't worry about the 'analyse this' button. Also make sure you run HijackThis as administrator.

Afterwards just run System Restore and restore to a date before all your problems, then do all the scans again.

Trying to run as administrator ....

Done as it directed - wont allow me to rightclick and select run as administrator despite it stating that this is what you should do if you have vista. So have typed a long command and its come up with this:

    # Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    ::1 localhost

The instructions actually state that you should find the lines HiJack this reports and delete them and then save as "hosts"

Not sure if its just the sheer amount of stuff I have downloaded this past few days which is slowing the laptop down, currently have Opera/IE/Firefox and loads of other stuff.

Won't allow you how? Try holding down the left shift key as you right click on the HijackThis icon.

I'm not sure what instructions you were following, but that was a hosts file you just copy pasted. Is it yours??

No please don't do that! If anything, it'll just mean the lines specifically pertaining to the hosts file. Don't "Fix" anything until someone tells you to.

Please just post a log after doing "save a log" or "scan system and save a log", or at worst find the log produced at the location davb pointed out.

Yeah Quicktime is different: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA40268?viewlocale=en_US although the browser plugin finder should have prompted you to install the correct plug-in.

Each time I try to run HiJack this, in the middle of the scan this notice appears:

"For some reason your system denied access to the hosts file. If there are any hijacked domains in this file. HiJack this may not be able to fix this.
If this happens you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type notepad c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and press enter.

For Vista simply exits HiJack This, Right click and choose "run as administrator."

I have attempted both of these things the log I posted is a result of the first set of instructions. The second option simply doesnt exit in the drop down list.

Each time I try this it offers me the chance to save log, regardless of whether I say Yay or Nay it gives me a blank notepad page.

To run HijackThis as administrator, you need to right mouse click on the HijackThis.exe file you have downloaded and select 'run as administrator' If this option is not available, make sure you are logged in with an administrator account.
Again, don't fix anything with HijackThis as it shows good things as well as bad.

Quicktime is a completely different thing to Flash, and if you are trying to play a Quicktime movie, then no amount of installing/fixing flash in any browser is going to make it work - you will have to install Quicktime.
