  • Persistant little !!!!!! isn't it. :D

The 017 entry is part of the trojan infection (Wareout).

    1. Disconnect from the net (unplug your modem).
    2. Close ALL Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows.
    3. With only HijackThis running, scan and fix the 017 entry.
    4. Restart and post a fresh log please.

i await your reply. Do you know how serious this trojan is?
  • The trojan can download further malicious code but I'd say at the moment you are in the clear. These rogue 017 entries often stick around.

    1. Restart the machine in Safe Mode.
    2. Open HijackThis and place a check next to the 017 entry.
    3. Click Fix Checked and close HijackThis.
    4. Click Start | Run and type CMD and click OK.
At the Dos Prompt Screen, type in cd\ and hit enter.
Now type in ipconfig /flushdns and click enter! (notice the space in the middle)
    Then close the command prompt.
    5. Now run GMER again (hopefully it won't cause any problems in Safe Mode).
    6. Restart the machine, connect to the net and generate a new HijackThis log for posting.
    7. Post the HJT log and GMER results.

PS. I'll be at work most of the day until late evening but I'll check in before I hit the sack. :)

Thanks so much for your help.

    Update:
    1. I ran safe mode as you suggest.
    2. I ran Hijack this and the 017 entry does not appear. Like yesterday it does not seem to appear when not connected to the internet.

    3. I tried to run GMER. But i cannot see the "SCAN" button when in safe mode. I tried sizing the screen but still no luck :(

So still back where i started for now.
    look forward to you advice.
  • Ok, lets try a different approach.

Please download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
    • Unzip it to your C:\ directory to make C:\RootkitRevealer.
    • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
    • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
    • Leave the machine alone while it's scanning or the log file will be affected.
    • When it's done, go up to File > Save and save the Rootkitrevealer log.
    • Copy the contents of the Rootkitrevealer.txt back here please.

Windows seems so exciting! I never get anything like this. My Apple Mac just works. :(
  • While connected to the net, close all browser windows, run HijackThis and fix the 017 entry.

Enter your Control Panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically. Make sure the radio dial has the Green Dot in it!!

Click Start | Run and type CMD and click OK.
At the Dos Prompt Screen, type in cd\ and hit enter.
Now type in ipconfig /flushdns and click enter! (notice the space in the middle)
    Then close the command prompt.

Restart the machine, connect to the net and generate a fresh log for posting please.
