I will clear the next bit up for you as well, you call it protectionism, i call it, me putting myself through an apprentiship, gaining all the relevant qualifications, investing thousands and thousands of pounds in tools, working hard and producing high standards of work for every firm or customer ive worked for, never missing a days work, taking pride in my work and then turning up for work on monday morning and being told i no longer have a job because its now gone to a foreigner who has just been on a two week course and is now just as good a tradesmen as you are and will work for a good few quid an hour less than you.

Luckily it hasnt happened to me yet but has happened to people i know.

Perhaps they are just slow learners.

Like i said i do not think it is right that somebody in their own country can lose their job to somebody who isnt from this country and is not properly qualified to do the job, fair enough if there are plenty of jobs available for everybody and the people who want to work over here can actually do the job then fine i dont see the problem in that.

Dont think you can try and make me look like some evil racist and make me feel guilty for my views on the subject because i dont, so yes if two men are available for work in britain and they are both qualified and competent in their field of work and there is only one job, then imho the british man should get the job and not somebody from another country whos sole purpose of coming to the country was to make money off the back of a boom.

But we are living in a global economy. Much like the OP has to adjust his desires to fit in with the current housing market, people also have to adjust to the current employment market. Call centres going overseas, manufacturing following lower labour prices, etc etc etc. Just look at Britains core industries of a century ago and where they are now... Textiles, coal mining, ship building, the list goes on, but that just a fact of the global market place. Why do you feel that you should be protected to shore up your wage demands when the rest of the workforce have to compete to win employment and opportunity, usually on the basis of cost/efficiency. Why should the call centrte worker who was forced to take a cut in his/her hourly rate to avoid losing their job then be expected to pay your inflated wages? Why do you feel that you should be above such competition?

We are all in this together, remember?

Hi Taughmon and welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear you had trouble posting and that you're not enjoying renting. I was just posting to say that you might want to have a chat with The_Fox, who is another poster on this site. You have very, very similar opinions and posting styles so you'll probably get on. In fact, for a few minutes I thought you were the same person, but I remember The_Fox saying that he's been married in the past, whereas you haven't, and you're also different ages. But the similarities are uncanny and rather eeire. See what you think.

Damn, with detective cleaver on the case, I wouldn't want to try another username :p
  • This whole thread is hilarious. So there never was an answer to why someone with 15% deposit couldn't get a mortgage. Also the story of the mythical opd lady being beaten by the system and having to live in a glorified shed while the evil immigrant bathes in Champagne every evening, all paid for by the poor tax payer, well why did nobody just suggest she moves to a different rented place? Or would that not have helped fuel the agenda? Anyway, would it be possible for the original poster to take a photo of him self crying about his lot in life and then post a link to said photo. I think it really would add to the overall level of whining that seems to be going on here.

Sorry but you chaps are at war, and I am not really after taking a side, very few of you are debating, most of you are thinking "what is the best thing I can say to win my argument", whether its the truth or not is irrelevant. . I am neither a bull or a bear, I simply want to buy a house now and I cannot. Being told I am not worthy or I am destined to die in my bedsit is frankly pathetic, it really is playground stuff on here. Its either black or white, win or lose, bull or bear, some of you cannot see what is staring you all in the face, just about all of you are fearful, and at least I have the honesty to admit I am as well.

Just one other thing, I would say that most of you so called die hard bulls are probably the most bearish here, that's why most of you are so aggressive and try so hard to destroy whatever possibility comes along that could end you fragile dreams, and you bears do the same in reverse.

There are issues within the property market today, if you guys want to ignore it, fine

To me it looks like you achieved what you wanted and do not really want to buy otherwise why haven’t you answered Procrastinator333's question.

Instead of going to night school and learning something that would give him a better future
Night schools haven't existed for decades. Adult education's had funding withdrawn and all they offer now is yoga, how to use your digital camera and using your first PC. The OP chose the 3rd option.

To be fair, you didn't really have to be Columbo to work that one out!

it was the way in which he didn't use capital i's on his posts, (and lots of brackets), and then SOME SHOUTING TOWARDS THE END OF SENTENCES THAT MADE IT A DEAD GIVEAWAY.

then i just had to search (and i did search) some of the key words(key words i say) for The_FOX. It really WAS THAT SIMPLE. MP's, mmmm...

I don't know if I agree. I know the traditional model of the night school may have gone, but there are plenty of education courses out there for people through colleges or institutions like the OU. And they aren't always that expensive either.

My wife left school at 15 but has recently been doing her qualifications as an adult, and I was surprised how relatively cheap it was to do A Levels through a local college in the evenings. I know degrees are obviously more expensive, as she now has her beady eye on one.

    Agreed

    Um, but you just said.......

This would be a lot easier if you just made up your mind.

So, you want to hide behind some sort of protectionism policy now? Never mind getting the best man for the job, check his passport?

But we are living in a global economy. Much like the OP has to adjust his desires to fit in with the current housing market, people also have to adjust to the current employment market. I think you have gone off on one a bit, i often have to lower my prices or quotes to win work, are you presuming call centre workers wages get cut but workers in the construction industry never take a wage freeze or drop? also my wages are not inflated. Get a job doing sub contracting work in the construction industry and then you will see what level of competition it involves.

Have you been recently ripped off by a cowboy builder by any chance. If so i recommend word of mouth as the best way to find a good tradesman who has a high standard of work and charges fair rates of pay.

(That slow learners joke was a bit sh*t by the way)

Are we losing you and The_Fox? Or just you? From the posting style and green and red light disco dance I'm presuming jimmy is the same person too, so are we keeping jimmy? I'm confused.

And I thought your primary recommendation was a quick passport check? What should I do if people recommend a Polish builder to me?
