No that isnt the case that i see, in the past on various sites for various firms i have had to go and snag plenty of immigrants work in the past due to the clerk of works not handing jobs over because the work that has been done by them was basically crap.
When an immigrant comes over and decides he wants to work in the construction industry he can either, work on the side, work for a one man band who doesnt care if the immigrant has the relevant trade or health and safety qualifications, or he can work for a main contractor. If he chooses to work for the main contractor he will be asked to show his cscs card which he wont have so what happens then is the immigrant goes on a course for a fortnight and comes back "qualified".
I am a carpenter/bench joiner and i had to do a 4 year apprentiship and also attend college throughout serving my time. (bit more than ten days)
At the moment i am working for a firm that doesnt employ immigrants due to the majority of them not being able to work to the level that is needed to complete jobs on time or to complete them to a high standard, i consider myself lucky that my firm takes a pride in the jobs they take on because if they didnt then i would likely be replaced by an immigrant who will work for a lot less money and deliver a finished job to the "ah that will be alright i reckon" standard.
I do agree that plenty of immigrants come to britain and get a job and work hard but within my line of work i see very little of that type of worker.
You can't tar all immigrants with the same brush as a lot of Countries still have "trade schools" where students that don't go on to higher education go to learn a trade over a period of 4 years and have work placements, similar to the old apprenticeship system that we had in the UK and which was ditched by many companies.0 -

I've not got proper broadband, so online's not possible.I think a lot of colleges and education providers now do distance and online learning because of the advent of the internet. I've just done a search for A Level maths and there are loads of places offering it via distance learning, some of which do their lectures online so you can learn from your lounge. Prices seemed reasonable too.
It's my speshulness.... I overthink things and overplan things.... contingency planning to the maxWith all due respect Pastures, you always seem to find the reasons to not do something rather than the reasons to do something...

I havent read all this but I would like to chip in and extend my sympathies towards people stuck renting who want to be paying off a mortgage.
Rents are mad at the moment. We moved into a titchy mid terrace starter home (from some era impossible to imagine now when people actually built houses for first time buyers to buy) 2 bed in NW London in 2008, paying £1100 a month. It was last ditch to get in before time ran out at the previous place (long story with a lying letting agent and another property) and I always felt like we were paying much too much, and if only we'd had time to haggle.
Well we moved out last year and the landlord put it on again at £1300, and apparently he got it too.
However, swapping renting for a owning with a big mortgage is not a cake walk either, and in some ways you are swapping one set of worries for another.0
