I called microsoft on 01954713950. You get to speak to an expert in Mumbai - I had loads of of help, but still my HP laptop would not work. It turned out to be damaged sectors.
Brief explanation - When its updating. the update data is stored in various locations on the hard drive. When your laptop try's to retreive the update data, it cannot as it's damaged. It then reverts to previous settings. In the end I lost everything and had to get an IT mate to sort it out.
Not been in here for years. Life got hectic!

ChkDsk is next on the list, as detailed in post 11.

Lost everything? Should have been simple enough to retrieve your data.
